electronic mess in a GS 1200
 

Hi. After a hard trip in the Stans (now in Istambul, ready to head Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Israel) the computer of my GS 1200 2005 is telling me bull shit. For it there is a front burnt lamp but all lamps are OK. Now, when the bike is in neutral gear, the screen says is in the second gear. I really do not mind if the computer says shit but I am a little bit afraid because I do not know whats gonna happen if it breaks down. May the bike stop at all?

You say you are in Istanbul - IMHO, it might be a good idea if you went to the BMW dealership there for a service / check over

I´ll go tomorrow morning. Hope to be on the road without serious problems, the GS 1200 is a great bike (no beraring trouble so far even riding Aral sea), but too much electronic.

Nice peope here. Electronic system in gear box needs to be replaced, but I can get away without fixing it (150 euro), bike will work anyway.

Lamp flashing they said is because front lamp it is not original one, but there are not BMW dealerships in Nukus, when I replaced it.

New tyres Metzeler Tourance, valves clearance, oil (engine, gear box, final drive) and filters (oil and air), everything about 500 euros. A lot of money, but I think less than in Spain and they are much more friendly.

I have met here an aussie guy rindig from Nepal. His GS 1200 have had a fuel pump failure. Anyone knows about fuel pump by pass?

Fuel pump bypass-
simple
If you are sure that your fuel pump controller has burned out (good idea to have a spare anyway)

1- locate it under 'dome' front left side by your fork stanchions
2- unscrew it out
3- cut wires as close to FPC as you can as you want to reuse the wire and plug
4- have a length of wire - tie positive via a fuse (which doubles up as a switch) to the positive of your battery OR to a power outlet NOT wired through the canbus but wired direct to battery
5- One wire to any earth point

This will enable your fuel pump to run continuously so, when you stop, pull out the fuse.

If you have time, make one and put it in place without connecting it- obtain a water resistant fuse holder that uses car fuses or blades- easy to replace anywhere.
I use a 10 amp fuse

I forgot to mention if you are still at BMW
as spares aside from ther usual service items:
1- a final drive seal
2- a pair of fork seals
3- spare ring antenna (another thing that goes and will strand you)
4- spare fuel pump controller
5- an alternator belt

all these bits are bespoke to the bike and very unlikely to be found outside BMW or a parts retailer.

A very helpful firm is MOTORWORKS in the UK 0044-1484 353 600 - (Darren or Yvonne) and they will send parts to you where you are or use DHL

There's a ton of info on fuel pump controller bypass on UKGSer, and some on ADVRider. A guy on ADVRider sells a bypass cable (w/connector), or just pick up a spare fuel pump controller. this is a very common problem, so I would definitely know how to bypass or carry a spare.

Ok. I got everything. And they got my money. But when I was there arrived a tow with a gs 800 on. A dutch guy, just one week on a trip, and ring antenna problem. Thanks again.
