F650gs dakar 2001 temp light not working
Hi.
I just bought this 2001 f650gs dakar and noticed that the temp light should come on when ignition is turned on. Mines dead. So far i have checked the following things: -fuses under seat ok -lightbulb is ok and changed just to make sure. -pulled thermometer plug and shorted the wires going on thermometer when ignition on - no life in temp light. -no voltage coming to thermometer when ignition is on, this leads me to think there is a shortage somewhere on the route from computer to thermometer, shouldn't there be like 5Vdc coming to thermometer? -pulled the computer connector for 5minutes and reconnected Everything else works like a charm. I'm intimatdd to keep on driving like this because of notorious water pump seal failures, every tip is welcome. How should i continue investigation? |
The fan switch is screwed into the thermostat IIRC. Its a gravity return type mounted on its side, hence is probably stuck. It can short the warning light circuit giving a double whammy of no fan, no light. One of the many bits of F650 only designed to last until you traded it for an R1100/50. Easy enough to check, run the engine for about ten minutes and the fan should run.
I did about 1500 miles controlling the fan via a rewire to the horn button. Give it a burst of fan manually when traffic made it smell hot. Could be a useful bodge to keep you mobile while you find what Aprilia stuffed up. Andy |
