F650GS Exhaust with tool kit storage
Hi,
I saw this nifty mod for the F650GS. Any one know if it is still available and if it is any good, if it affects engine management, etc, and if there are any alternatives? I think it seems like a great idea to remove the right side exhaust and use it for storage: http://faq.f650.com/GSFAQs/Photos/Ex...gs_exhaust.jpg http://faq.f650.com/GSFAQs/Photos/Ex...ister2-700.jpg http://faq.f650.com/GSFAQs/Photos/Ex...ister1-700.jpg |
I've seen that setup before, but didn't note who made it. Any idea? It's a clever design, although looking at the pics I don't think the rhs storage space is very secure. Anyone with a screwdriver could open it.
From what I understand of the engine management of the F650, it will adjust itself to cope with a free-flowing exhaust without any need for owner intervention. I'd be interested in other comments, as I would like something like this arrangement for mine. |
I think it was made by adventurepipe.com , but I don't think they exist any more. As for security, I bet it would be the safest part of the bike. Who would think to open up an exhaust pipe to see if there is anything inside?
Only issue I have with it for storing tools is that it is up high and way bÄack - not optimal for weight distribution. Still, I think it is pretty awesome. I'm sure you could come up with many hacks to lock it. |

Probably the best way to make it secure would be to replace the slotted screws with security Torx fasteners, and then keep the appropriate key somewhere handy. Not many people carry those about, especially off the beaten track. I'm surprised how few aftermarket pipes there are for the baby GS. The adventurepipe one seemed the best of the lot. Ah well, the search continues. |

Thanks Ian, looks good. Any idea about the sound compared to standard?

No idea, I just came across this when searching for ideas for a storage container to replace the right hand exhaust.
There are other options like this: H A T T E C H . d e - total motorbike & car solutions Although not quite as sexy. Another disadvantage is that this quite obviously looks like a storage container. For me the main reason for using a dummy exhaust as a strorage container would be to hide important/valuable things in plain sight, as Wheelie said above 'Who would think to open up an exhaust pipe to see if there is anything inside?' A very sexy (but very expensive) option would be to get an exhaust from Staintune F650GS Exhaust and buy the matching dummy pipe for the RHS. As the dummy pipe is just a sealed cannister you would then have to get someone to fabricate an entry for it. |
