I believe that pricing is consistent with what they (TT) were charging for a F650 single "cheeks" tank? My understanding is that part of this (high) pricing is due to the need for a fuel pump in the tank on EFI bikes (just checked - the F800 tank is gravity drained - no excuse there!)

IMO one or two 10+ liter fuel cans on the back can achieve maximum flexibility with minimal cost... but for what its worth, the added cost of TT tanks still undercuts the cost of more expensive (R1200) models in stock trim with less overall range.

I've had the F800GS for a year and a half now. With a 17L tank there really is no need to add a second tank. At most a cheap throw away 5L can will do the job bringing it up to the 22L that Colebatch had when he rode all the way to Siberia.

Honestly where are you going that would warrant the extra weight? I dearly love the 800 but when it goes down it is a heavy bike to lift up, especially when fully loaded.

It suits my needs of doing trails and crossing Europe but if you want a true off road bike then get "an off road bike". Of course if you get a true off road bike it makes long distance trips a pain.

Personally the 800 is for me and I chose it over the 650 purely out of vanity. I didn't like the cast wheels and the softer looks of the 650. The black and yellow said danger tape to me and I followed my instinct.

One week after Colebatch left Irkutsk a Czech couple arrived two up on a grey F800GS and I also saw another German one in one of Colebatch's photos so they do get about.

It's personal choice at the end of the day.

I am recomending Touratech fueltank on F800GS to increase range to 750km. It is 9kg and takes 20litres. A little timeconsuming to get it on the bike but it is worth it.

Note that both BMW and Touratech engineguards won`t fit this tank. The tank is very solid though.

The tank gives the bike better weightbalance when bike is loaded. The problem of adding more than 25kg (29kg minus original cover) is that the steering bearings broke at 19 000km. BMW changed it for free.

There is also a 1.6 gallon rear mounted tank.

Weird.... though i agree with you guys on the off-road capabilities, I strongly disagree about the bike weak low end torque.

I even see it as one of the bikes strongest points, it's low and mid-range.

I can give you as an example, in Morocco with a fully loaded bike (yes those dreaded metal cases), crossing the Rheris drybed Fesh-fesh (i believe it's the same one you crossed colebatch), during a turn in second gear, the bike got bogged down in a rut, accidently droped rpm to under 1.5k and the bike got through without clutch as i was to busy holding on to the handlebar.

I see the rear tank also has a plate, what's the load capacity? Can you mount a top box or strap down a drybag to it?

I'm not sure what the load capacity is on the tank and plate but a top box could possibly be mounted on it.
I put about 1500 miles of gravel roads on mine last week. I had a heavy bag leaning on the tank and a light bag strapped to it. It performed great. Never missed a beat and fed the 1.6 us gallons to the bike without fail.
This tank earned the Bigdon Seal of Approval!:D Whatever that's worth.:thumbup1:
