G/S Exhaust systems
 

The stock exhaust on my '82 G/S is shot. I am considering an aftermarket replacement. Most of the G/S or GS models I have come across have had the Supertrapp pipe fitted. most of the owners seemed happy but there does seem to be a price paid in extra noise. Any advise on exhaust system options. Also looking for feedback on rear shock brand choice. Most people seem to go with either the Works Performance or Ohlins (more $)units. Happy, Not? I relaced my stock exhaust with a R100GS stainless one, used. Stock fitting, quiet, no hassles.

I've used a Works Performance shock since day one, and it has been excellent. It has required a couple of rebuilds, but then it has been 14 years. And they did them both for nothing - but don't always expect that, they do normally charge something for a rebuild.

The ride with the Works is impressive - it works like a shock should - never notice the backend doing anything, it just absorbs everything. When we do notice it, it's when we hit a bad bump and really expect to get kicked hard in the ass, but nothing happens - it just squats a little more.

Those who go for the Ohlins are generally happy too, but support may or may not be better, depending on where you are.

According to my BMW parts CD, the R80 G/S and R80 G/S PD had a black (maybe flat black) exhaust system. I believe that the muffler was available in chrome as well.

I'd sooner have a totally chrome system. Does the R80 ST exhaust system fit the R80 G/S PD without ANY modifications? I would leave the ST's heat shield off though.

I presently have a SS SuperTrapp. As nice as it is, I'd prefer a stock system that is quiet if I can justify the cost of a new one.

The ST muffler should fit perfectly. The R100GS muffler is stainless and also bolts on. It does have an additional bracket for the larger sidecover, but is otherwise the same.

So I recently acquired an '81 G/S with a rotting exhaust and need to replace it.

Does the stock R100GS system bolt onto the G/S without modification?

yes this is an old thread!

The GS exhaust has two upper bolt on tabs, instead of the G/S's single. However, it goes on fine, you just don't have the second bolt attached. I have a GS in my shop, but currently have a Sito muffler installed (Motobins in the UK sells this) as a replacement to the Loud Supertrapp that I removed. I can't use the GS exhaust because my bag mounts are two narrow. I think the GS exhaust is a good option - I wouldn't recommend a supertrap. Kenhin and staintune are others that reportedly work as good as stock.

staintune look good and work well according to reports.
re shock, have a foxracingshox on my r11gs and have had plenty of rebuilds. would not recommend though it does work well when it has oil in it.

Yes .. but not in stock I'd think. You 'd need to order it in .. and the factory will process it as they get to it. So a wait involved.

The ST header and collector pipes were crome plated .. they still rusted out on my R80G/S (definatly NOT stainless -yes bough from BMW shop as a BMW part, in BMW stickered plastic bags). So that is when I go the complete staintune system.. been there for quite a few years now ... has some battle scars but still works.

Sitting in a box right now - not doing anyone much good. It's a nice complete system. Like I say, I love the weight (light), the look, and the low profile setup, just couldn't live with the noise. I think that the Stock GS system is the way to go, or staintune if you want new. Yes, there is a wait involved for those. I'm not sure about Kenhin - sold by Motobins out of the UK - looks like a stainless replica of the stock system, much like staintune.
