GS Adv crash bar modification
Has anyone modified the engine crash bars on a GS Adventure to protect the rear of the cylinder head and tappet cover as well as the front? All searches of HUBB and the web shows Hepco Becker's but thats all.
Went for a slide a few days ago and ground the tappet cover through. Had the rear of the cylinder been protected I could have kept going. Any help? Cheers, Wolfy. did the same myself. Cleaned rocker covers with petrol and filled holes with Quicksteel and could carry on. In fact I only changed the cover for a new (secondhand) one yesterday (about 6 months ago). The bars also bent. I personally would not try to modify them, they are basically crap. Cut your losses and stick some H&B bars on. bob |

Was starting to think that way rather than remodel. They look to do more than the standard ones - http://www.hepco-becker.de/_eng/frameset.php - now to find availabilty in OZ? How did you bend yours/ what surface were you riding? I'm heading off road soon into sand and rocks!! Cheers, Wolfy. |
I use Wunderlich crash bars in my 1150GS which are good but a pain to install. Once fitted, they're fine although they don't offer much protection to the rear portion of the valve cover/cylinder head. One good point is that they don't need to be loosened or removed to do the valve clearances unlike some people have reported with H&B bars.
To protect the whole head I also use Stanton Head Guards - bolt in in the same way as the stock plastic protectors but much larger & made from 1/2" thick heat treated cast aluminium. I've seen a few photos at www.advrider.com showing how they withstand crashes. Downside is that they're not cheap - US$200 + shipping? (bought mine second hand). Thanks Steve and Frank. Looked at the advrider site and got a lot of info there. The Stantons are not in Aus as far as i can work out but they get huge wraps! I spoke to Rob at Motohansa and he was very helpful with the Hepco & Becker bars. I'll try them and see if i can get my hands on some Stantons asap. Can't have too much protection.
