Is there a way to find out ( before it dies) if the clutch has wear?

I know that people predict the life of a clutch on R1150 / R1200 but this varies with riding style.

So before I replace a good clutch, does anyone know if it can be measured without stripping the clutch?

Its impossible to know exactly how worn your clutch is without taking it apart. your clutch bite point is an indication that your clutch is getting worn, the further out your lever has to travel the more worn your clutch is, altough other factors can affect this and its only really as accurate as saying the more miles you put on your bike the more worn your clutch will be
Why are you thinking about changing your clutch? As these bikes are so expensive and longwinded to get the clutch replaced its best just to wait until your clutch starts slipping before replacing it and get it changed as soon as

Well I found out from another forum that it is possible.
Pull off the starter motor
Strap the clutch lever so it frees the clutch.
Look in through to opening that once had the starter motor and using plasticine or a 5mm Allen key you can assess the wear on the clutch. For my model it should be 4.1mm thick.
That is a lot easier than removing the gearbox to find a healthy clutch.

Can you explain the use of plasticine or a 5mm allen key? Those are quite different objects to do your measuring with and I can't get my head around what you do with either of them? :confused1:

The plasticine is used to get a measurement of the clutch wear. Tkae off the starter motor. Then you will see the flywheel and clutch. There is a pressure plate, then the clutch then the flywheel. You want to know the "meat" left on the clutch.

Take some blu-tak or even some soap and press it in to the clutch edge. When you remove the blu-tak you will now have a high ridge. With a steel rule measure the width of the ridge.
If you don't have a steel rule (or any ruler) then a 5 mm allen key will give you a 5mm measurement.
My clutch was down to 3.8mm The minimum was 4.2mm so I was overdue a change. The new clutch had nearly 8mm on it.
