GSA1200- long ride preparation
 

Hi all, planning a Singapore to Sweden ride with a 2009 GSA with 40000 km
I am all kitted with bike modifications to protect it- with covers for headlights, oil cooler, fuel injectors, hydrolic reservoirs and abs etc.
But I am keen to get input on
1. What should be changed- mechanical or electrical before a long ride: electronics, fuel pump, seals, clutch?? etc

2. What anyone brings in terms of spare parts- tools/parts etc

Alternatively you could just have the bike serviced, fit new tyres and go, which is what I would do. Certainly my airhead GS needed no more when I set of on a RTW trip on it with 40,000 km on the clock and wouldn't expect your GSA to need anything extra.

For spares a clutch and throttle cable, a couple of oil filters and a pair of spark plugs.

A service would cover most issues, but not all. Personally I have had two slave cylinders go out, so I would certainly have that checked carefully, maybe just replaced.

Also, personally I would ditch the OEM battery (which tend to die without warning) and probably bring a spare fuel pump. That' s probably about it...

And the R1200GSA doesn't have clutch/throttle cables, it is hydraulic.

I would agree with swapping the battery also look at the fuel pump controller, the old one which was a bit dodgy is silver the new "updated" one is black, so if you have a silver one on your bike change it for the new black one and carry the silver one as a spare,

Thanks for the info, 2 days ago my fuel pump electronics died...so I now have a new pump with electronics as the pump was starting to show some cracks and the battery was changed 6 months ago, they seem to last about 2 years

Preparation for long ride
 

Pre - Checks:
- Full service your motorcycle before the trip.
- Install new Battery
- Install new front and rear tires (70% on road 30% off road)
- Fix Electric socket for charging Phones and GPS
- Check if your cables (clutch and brakes) and controls intact and working.
- Ensure that the frame, suspension, chain, and fasteners are all secure and intact
- Make sure the center stand and/or side stand isn’t cracked or bent, and that springs properly hold the assembly.
- Check if shocks and fork springs and fork seals are in good condition.

Spanners, Plier, Cutter, Wheel Spanner / Axel adapter, Screw drivers (+ and -), Wrenches, Hammer, Socket Spanner, Torx keys, Allen keys, Spark plug spanner, Oil filter cap remover, Working Gloves, Duct tape & electric tape (partial rolls take less space), Wire, hose clamps, misc nuts & bolts, Air Compressor – Pump, Tire Pressure Gauge, Tire lever, Tire Repair Kit.
