Is my thermostat working?
1 Attachment(s)
I have recently had a problem with my 2001 f650gs. The engine temp light comes on within 10-15 minutes of driving and the fan comes on within 5 minutes of driving. This led me to believe that the thermostat may not be opening. So I pulled the thermostat and put it in hot water to see if it opens. The water temp in the pot went up to 220 Fahrenheit but nothing appeared to move in the thermostat. Right now the pin at the end of the thermostat is sticking out approximately 2 cm. Is is open or closed? I would assume it to be closed but I am not sure what the open position is either. Any help would be appreciated.

maybe a silly question but have you tried bleeding the cooling system?
There's a bleed screw on the right side of the Engine where the coolant hose goes into the head iirc. There's a massive air pocket if it isn't bled correctly which will cause the bike to overheat very quickly and make sure the rad cap is the high point when filling so you'll want the bike stood upright when filling. To answer your question from that pic the Thermostat does look closed. I would Bleed the cooling system then run the bike up if the rad isn't getting hot and you're sure the system is bled correctly then its likely the thermostat or less likely coolant pump failure or blockage in the system |
