Major differences between R65 and R80GS?

I'm currently browsing the Touratech catalog, wondering if some of the gear designed for an R80GS/R100GS wouldn't fit my R65 (non GS, monoshock) is there any difference in the engine position in the frame between the off road and on road BMW's? An R65 is basically an R80 with smaller pots.
Specifically i want to fit a sump guard (and maybe some other bits) to mine and the Touratech one looks good, although pricey.

Hard to say if the sump guard will fit but I think the R65 had a different oil pan (and pickup and dipstick).
The R80/R100GS oil pan has 4 holes to attach the sump guard and I think the Touratech setup use this holes.

Someone here will know ...

R65s have different frames and forks to R80s I think, they are lower and have a shorter wheelbase. R45 and R65 engines are shorter stroking than their big brothers, however, R80 and R100 engines and transmissions will bolt in - how this relates to GS models I cannot answer.

But someone at the R65 forum will probably know ...

Good luck

I dont think the frame and suspension are different, wheelbase is the same. You can compare some details here:

Yes, fair enough - for the GS models.

I think though that Sean might be referring to a non-GS model.

Ian

And what year was the bike manufactured

R65s used a smaller frame than r80,100s .. until a certain year ... 1985? or there abouts. Think if you have the mono shock it will have the same frame.

The GS uses a smaller sump .. and the sump guard won't fit to the other models. Best off making your own if you have some skills. 2 to 3 mm aluminium sheet - cut and band to suit. Do a mock up in cardboard first - an old cereal box should be good to experiment with.

Thanks for the replies. It seems to fit an original sump guard i would have to get a GS sump as the guard bolts onto lugs which are incorporated into the sump.
It might be best to have one made up and bolted to the frame though. I've heard that the head of a shovel works well with a bit of cutting and welding.
