To much oil? Backfiring while stating! F650
 

Hi I have a problem with my F650 1994, I have not had the bike long. I went out for a ride (included 30min motorway journey) yesterday checked the oil level before i left it was near to the max mark.

When i arrived back home the bike was left for an hour or so before trying to restart now am unable to start the bike, it back fires while trying to start, before the bike started first time. Also when dipping the oil it is now well over the max mark. Ive got a spark.

Sounds like there is too much oil in it but I doubt thats causing the starting problem.

Have a look in the airbox to see if its been blowing excess oil through the breather hose, this might've fouled the air filter.

The only time mine has backfired & refused to run was when the rubber hose from the throttle body to the cylinder head got a hole. This lets air leak in which screws up the mixture, apparently its a common fault.

In your case I suspect a fuel leak in your carbs. I had it a few times that the fuel level in the float bowl started to rise due to crappy seal around the float needle assy. The bikes run fine if you closed the tap while parking and as long as you keep going. If you leave the tap open that's it and the poor thing drowns as you try to start. Unlike other bikes the Funduro often does not leak fuel out of the Carb overflow. The problem is also easy recognizable as the bike smokes black and guzzles a lot of fuel / has black plugs.
Diagnosis is also easy if you drain the fuel from the carbs and dry your plugs. After putting things back together you then crank the engine and open the tap and the engine should start as soon as it gets fuel. Don't use this as a fix as the problem will get worse and will leave you stranded sooner or later.

Also lots of trouble with Funduros if the carbs go out of balance.
Forget the silly vaccuum meter adjustment as described in the workshop manual.
The symptoms of the carbs being out of tune is either the engine stalling or revving up too high instead of idling. The first also comes together with nasty starting problems. If the adjustment is "out" on the other side the engine does not want to take throttle.
With some practice the carbs are synchronized in no time and better than you will ever get them with the vacuum meter.
