Need a writeup in SPANISH for how to do a F650 valve adjustment.
 

Hey guys, I am in Ecuador and have negotiated a valve adjustment for $40. I want to print out a writeup in Spanish so that the mechanic can study how to do the job before he tries it.
The shop I am taking it to seems pretty reputable and has a lot of bikes moving in and out of it from Harleys to Ducatis. The mechanic told me that he has never done this job on a BMW before though.

Where will he get shims?

I know this is a stupid question, but what are shims?

I went to print this out and do the translation today but I just dont know enough mechanical jargon to translate it effectively. Im betting that there is a Spanish or Mexican bmw website that has this writeup.

The mechanics of valve adjustment for your bike shouldn't differ much from any other motor of that design. You should ask the mechanic about the shims. Different than what most of us are used to, in being able to find parts easily and have bikes repaired quickly, it's not unusual for people in some countries to wait weeks, even months, for parts to arrive....and they're used to this - it's not a shocker for them.

Do the valves need to be adjusted? Does the bike run poorly, or hot?
I'm afraid that your good intentions of having a mechanic unfamiliar with that bike perform valve adjustment could lead to problems you do not now have.

I have an XT and a Landy 110 and a lot of the translations, eg. clutch, brake etc are the same for any vehicle.

OK, Shims, these are small discs of hardened metal in VERY specific, machined sizes, that fit between the 'bucket' and the Camlobe on your BMW. if you put a thick one in say 0.12mm it decreases the gap and a thinner one, say a 0.10mm increases the gap. on older bikes the gap on the valve adjustment was done with a setscrew & Nut.

special tools are (usually) needed to fit these.

It is not a job for a 'greasy spanner' mechanic. :nono:

If the mechanic is doing valve adjustments on Ducati's succesfully, the F650 will not be a problem as long as he has the specs. The problem here is getting the spare parts! Have you contacted BMW in Quito? As was mentioned previously, the parts are very specific and must be ordered after you take the motor apart and discover what size you need. This may be a can of worms your about to open. Tread carefully ;)
