Preventive maintenance

Hi all,

I'm in the process of getting ready for a next big tour (3 months Middle East from Western Europe). My bike is a 2016 BMW R1200 GS Adventure with 40.000 km.

Is there anything in particular I should pay attention to in terms of the bike maintenance? It will get a full service but would you recommend any 'weak' parts that are worthwhile to replace, just to be sure? Someone mentioned the alternator belt, any thought?

Many thanks,
Oskar

Look in your owner's manual for the work that needs to be done on a major service, there will be a service that needs to be done every 30 or 40k (in addition to more frequent services). Get all of that done - then you should be confident that you will only need routine wear items for the next big interval.

Get the recall done?

The 1200GSLC is a wildly complicated and sophisticated machine. Just make sure you have breakdown cover.

From my experience, there are a few weaknesses to check.

Have the cardon shaft removed, checked and greased.

Spokes... They are known to come loose. Have them checked. They should "ping" when tapped with a screwdriver.

RDC pressure sensors. The aluminium stalk is very fragile. Treat it like glass or it will snap and leave you with stranded with a flat tyre.

Rear shocks. It's a weakness on the bike. They are known to fail with frequency. Especially the ESA model. You can still ride the bike but it will be very bouncy.

Your bike is six years old now. How old is the battery ? Fit a new one if its the original.

Send your rear shock to this guy - DenzO on this thread:

Tell him your weight.
Enjoy the trip

So how did the bike hold up?
Planning long trip with a 2016 GS as well.

There’s hundreds of South Americans riding round South America at the moment and the vast majority of them are on modern, water cooled, GS/As. So if your planning to go there you’ll be fine bier
