r 100 gs starter motor

Hello all,

my 1988 r100 gs starter motor is acting up, ive been riding in some cold conditions in northen pakistan and it sounds as though the starter motor clutch is slipping.

In warmer weather where i am now it starts easy however i can still hear the uncomfortable wirring sound coming from the starter motor.

What is the best solution, should i repace the whole unit, do i need to?

regards

Marcus.

Take it apart, clean it and lube it.

No starter clutch in that unit, it uses a Bendix.
The magnets commonly become unglued in the housing and if they are not busted and you are careful, you can epoxy them back in place. Pay attention to their position and polarity.
Visit Jorge's GS site for more info.

Marcus,

I'd also suggest to clean it and lube it. Mein started making funny noises soon after going serious dirt roads. From then on it lasted about 20.000 more k's, before the motor was wrecked - I was too lazy to service it :-( Cost me quite a few bucks...

Sometimes, its as simple as the bendix sticking out. Then the motor turns the starter... not good.

Maybe just good clean will sort it.

As AliBaba says, a clean and lube should take care of it. As I understand it, the magnets in the Valeo tend to come unglued in hot weather so that is unlikely to be your problem. Also a magnet breaking off means that the starter is completely broken and won't work again just because it is warmer.

I've taken mine apart probably six times in 185,000 km, usually because it is starting to squeal but sometimes when it refuses to start. It seems that the solenoid can stick and not activate the starter. I've found it to be an easy job only taking from 30 minutes to an hour.

Good luck!
