R1150 GS Adventure Mud/Stone Guard
 

Shortly after I bought my 2003 R1150 GS Adventure, I bought a Fenda Extenda which I later returned and instead decided to make a mud/stone guard for my Adventure that was cheaper, more elegant, simple and functional...IMO. Made from an 8" x 8" (then trimmed and bent) sheet of 0.025" stainless steel.

The section that "hangs over" the engine protection cross bar was rolled for a 1/2" radius. The photo shows closed cell foam tape between the cross bar and mud/stone guard, but that was replaced by an 8" long section of thin wall (3/4" ID, 1" OD) black rubber/vinyl washer hose that was slipped over the cross bar for a non-metal-to-metal, rattle-free installation.

The BMW engine protection plate was drilled and tapped for two M6 fasteners with fiber washers used under the heads of the fasteners as well as between the guard and engine protection plate. Loctite 242 was used to secure the fasteners.

Hi Alex,

The photo of your modification seems to have disappeared from the HU site and I didn't see it on your own website. Do you still have it available? How did this mud guard work out?

According to your website you've got two Adventures but you don't believe them to be worthy of a true "round the world" type of adventure. I've got a 2003 Adventure as well as a 1989 R100GS. The Adventure has blown two rear main seals (with contamination of the clutch) and two ABS control modules (OK, the first one BMW replaced at their discretion even though it seemed to be working just fine). The fuel pump has quit once (in the shop) and recently the fuel pump assembly was leaking so badly that I had to put silicone sealant on it to get home. Seems the old '89 is just as reliable, if not more so, plus it has the advantage that when something does go wrong I can usually fix it myself. Hmmm

My stone/mud guard works great, by the way.

Just reading the issues you've had proves my point. Your fuel pump for example. There is nothing like gravity feed to a set of carbs.

People confuse the terms reliability and maintenance free. What is more reliable on an oilhead? Answer: nothing. Oilheads may be more maintenance free, but even that is debatable.

The reason for installing your 'stone guard' was to avoid what problems that have occurred on that model bike?

Just to avoid unnecessary sand/stone blasting of the front engine cover and to keep crud off it. And because manufacturers in their infinite wisdom design and install fenders that are shorter than they ought to be.
