r850r strange noise

hello all....I have a noise on my r850r, 2000 model, over 100,000 miles but still runs fine apart from a grating sound somewhere...it is hardly noticeable but more pronounced when two-up...(if it were a push bike it would be like a brake block rubbing on the wheel at a certain position)..its not the brakes, by the way..at low speeds its an audible grating sound, at motorway speeds it turns into a hardly noticeable constant see-saw type irritation...someone else could ride this bike and not notice anything so its not about to fall to bits..when I freewheel downhill it is not there so drivetrain is a suspect.I suspect the universal joints......sure one of you has had this before..????

It's hard to diagnose a sound by reading something but have you checked if there is any lateral play on your rear wheel. Place your hands on the rear wheel at 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock and push and pull to feel if there is any play there. If there is don't panic - they all do that :) and it can be adjusted. The adjustment is best done by a dealer - it takes them 20 minutes and no parts required. They adjust the large nut that is positioned on the inside of the drave shaft. It is heat sealed in with loctite so it has to be heated to 120c to release it and then retightened to 150NM so you are better off letting the dealer do this unless you have some good tools to do this job yourself. It may not be the cause of your problem but anyway it's something worth checking and having adjusted anyway.

bmw box

well I have pulled the gearbox off and gone in....one of the gears has been rubbing on a selector fork....so....back to the uk and a second hand box exchange in my suitcase for 425 pounds ? big-bucks rebuild at bmw ?.... er..no..I have cleaned the box out...bearings are all ok, I have shaved a fraction off the fork and another off the side of the gear, there is .5mm clearance now...it is all bolted back and have been thrashing round a while now.NOISE GONE.total for loctite, oil and sealer 22 euros......should be good for another 100000 miles....:confused1:
