Spareparts for a 3 month trip

Hey there,
I'm planning my 3 month trip from Bishkek to The Northcape.
Although I'm a handy boy, I'd like to get some advice about spareparts. What is essential to bring with me without getting to heavy. Sparkplugs, oil, lightbulbs....and???
I'm riding a BMW 1200GS 2005.
Any suggestion is welcome.

Happy travel!!!
Jon

I'm riding a 1200GS and they do have a little taste for oil... No', will not carry 3 Ltr with me, just 500ml or so. Dispite the not necessary items, any suggestions for usefull spare-parts? :cool4:

Your most likely failure will be punctures in your tires: a plug kit and a small compressor to pump them back up are essential. Most of those little pumps are handy, but cheaply made. I would carry a small hand pump as a back up.

Will your bike run on very low octane fuel? I don't know your route, but poor quality gas is likely in places.

Spare key- does your bike have the chipped key/ ring antennae? Worth researching- as some of them have been known to fail and leave the rider stranded.

Do you have stout handguards? A spare clutch lever and brake lever might be wise in case of lever-breaking falls.

Flat nylon 1 inch tubular webbing, 20' for towing.

Oil filter?

New brake pads before you leave?

JB weld, superglue, Duct tape, electrical tape, zip ties, fuses,

Shop manual-digital?

Do you have a center stand? If not, an extendable trail stand prop is handy.

Hope this helps...............shu

Jon:

What is your route?

A straight-line route between Bishkek and North Cape (Norway) is almost entirely within Kazakhstan and Russia. Outside of (perhaps) Moscow, I think your chances of getting any kind of spare part for your BMW motorcycle are zero.

On the other hand, if you were routing straight west into Turkey, then north through Europe to North Cape, you could reasonably expect to be able to get parts, tires, etc. with no more than a couple of days delay once you got into Turkey.

So, let us know your planned route, because that will very significantly influence recommendations for spares to be carried. For example, if you routed Bishkek to Turkey, and you ensured the bike was in near-perfect condition before starting your trip (meaning, new tires, new brake pads, recent oil change, all other recommended maintenance up to date), then you could reasonably expect to not have to carry out any maintenance until you reached Turkey, where you could get parts.

But if you are planning to head north-west out of Bishkek, across Kazakhstan and Russia, you are going to need to do some serious spares planning, because you won't have a hope of getting any BMW spares along the way (other than in Moscow).

I'd (respectfully) disagree with this one, if you're in the wrong place when a headlight goes you could be stopped in your tracks if the light is fading.

Lightbulbs does sure goes into the bag, just like Gaffer-tape, Tyraps, rope.... McGyver on route!
