Speedo cable
Hello,
ive just had my tranny rebuilt in Zanjan Iran with blow torch and angle grinders and alot of hammering. I have a freind bringing replacement tranny from Australia. Will i need a new speedo cable i think the original was chewed up, and what other parts should my freind bring? Thanks Marcus |
If it's the same as on 1100 (i guess it is), then cable only is sufficent. You may check the front wheel's speedo part, if the gears are greased and well moving there, then yes, you only need the cable. Do not forget to clean and oil the cable every 20,000kms or so! I do it with regular engine oil, nearing 120Ks on two GSes now and no prob with the speedo cables.

This make a good seal and will stop water running down the cable and seeping into your gearbox, giving you that lovely, creamy, emulsified oil. That stuff will knacker your new box in no time! John |
Sorry, ignore my previous post. I now see airheads have the speedo coming from the gear box...

As mentioned before, zap-straps to seal off the rubber boot from water. You may as well replace the boot all together and bring a few spares...they're cheap. More importantly, you will need new stretch bolts for your driveshaft. These can only be used once and should be discarded, unless you have no spares. You will need loctite blue for the bolts, and hylomar grease for your driveshaft...you must grease your driveshaft at both ends everytime you take apart this end of your bike, it will save you a lot of trouble along the way. Use some gasket glue to seal the neutral sensor on the bottom of the tranny, it's nutorious for leaking and the tranny must be removed before you can maintain it! Now, the MOST important thing you must do before instalation is seal the breather hole above the output seal with silicone. This was mentioned in detail in one of your previous threads. Have fun!! :)

thanks for the info
Okay, maybe a little more experience and pre trip know how would of saved this trouble. But you never get time at home to focus on one thing and now i have the chance. Very expensive schooling however. I have had my tranny rebuilt by some bush mechanics, hopefully will last till pakistan where hopefully my freind arrives with new tranny and new driveshaft.
The neutral selector bolt is leaking will keep my eye on it and gasket glue bolt into new tranny as suggessted. Also will cable tie small boot onto speedo cable at tranny end. Good idea. When it comes to greasing, will i find ' molly' grease in Pakistan. What do i look for. I also read all the links in ADV really helpful. I think i am starting to understand 'why' driveshaft breaks. I was ok at physics at school. Thanks for the replys Marcus |
