Topbox or luggage rolls on GS?
So a bit noisy question: who prefers solid topbox and who package rolls?
I'd myself had a bad experiences with topboxes previously because they shake so much - can't put anything fragile inside and they tend to consume mouting frame into pieces. And it was with streetbike. Only tow pros were - my passanger could relax his back on topbox and i could secure it if going away from the bike. With GS i drive more shaky gravelroads so i thought maybe going to rolls is a bit better idea? Cheers, Margus |
Unfortunately my BMW topbox rattles and destroys anything inside if it is not wrapped up in something soft and/or if the box is half empty. It also tends to jump off the mount when I hit potholes (I lost an expensive digital camera in this way).
My luggage roll is by no means a perfect alternative. No matter how well I tie it down, it always shifts a little and annoys my pillion. You also need to protect fragile equipment against bumps and access to stuff buried deep down can be a pain. It is, however, good for packing a sleeping bag, mattress, tent and warm clothing on longer trips. I vote Topbox. A decent quality topbox will serve you better in the long run. Strap the box onto the frame with tie-downs to help reduce shake and ride slower on rough trials if you can. |
