Trueing - tightening BERR rims on my 1200GS
So - anyone out there have a good process for trueing the BM rims?
I have built a ton of regular rims but have heard a few people say be careful with the BM rims - you need a machine - let a pro do it... I understand all of that but have built 100's of rims myself and find it hard to believe that one cannot - given some deftness and some patience - true up one of these rims. And, as with most things BM nowadays - they find new and inventive ways to get you to bring it to the shop for them to fix it. So - anyone have any ideas or points before I screw it up and spend a day getting it right? Thanks in advance, Dean |
There have been some posts on the Adventure riders Old School Forum from folks who claim to have trued them without a machine. They have even posted instructions.
Try a search there. However none of the wheel builders I have spoken to in Australia will touch them so it must have a reasonable difficulty factor. |
I got a bit more aggressive response from the guys on advrider - all saying don't touch them stupid...
The manual says to adjust them like any other rim. I think (and I may get killed here) that it will just take patience. There is only so much one can do lacing a wheel - rim - hubb - spokes - in - out... I have yet to decide whether to chance it but thanks for the info and I will take a look. Dean |
The gent who wrenches my 1100 GS when I cant said he had a hell of a time when he tried one. I believe he said around 6 hours. He said he has done hundreds of standard spoke wheels prior.
I have a bit of run-out on my rear and will send both off for a tuneup this winter to Woodys in Denver. I have seen Woody post on advrider: "Dont try them yourself or you will owe me more money". :nono: Good Luck WoodysWheelWorks.com |
