What type of Øhlins for R80GS
My WP shock has broken again, pretty bad this time, and I was thinking of replacing it with an Øhlins.
I’ve been looking at 46DRS ( http://www.ohlins.com/46drs.shtml ) but strangely enough I find that it doesn’t have adjustable compression damping and no reservoir. What type of Øhlins do people use? Any comments? |
Hi AliBaba,
I just bought exactly that oehlins shock 46 DRS from Touratech for my R 100 GS. Since I am travelling at the moment I expressively asked for a heavy duty shock with external reservoir, but got the answer that this one is the one most suitable for my purposes. The Touratech catalog states that this shock is used for bikes, on which is no space for a reservoir. Which I find strange, since my white power actually has a reservoir. Hey AliBaba,
I've used the Øhlins 46DRS on my 1989 R100GS for about 60,000 km. When I installed it I thought I was getting too much sag so I installed the next stiffer spring. Had the bike fairly overloaded for a year of travelling but had no problems at all with the shock. Hope that helps! Ekke |
Hi. Iv got a Øhlins 46ers/drs on my R80GS.
After a tripp around OZ my opinion is that it does the jobb good, but I miss compression adjustment. I will probebly cange to a Øhlins 46PRCS if its room... Good luck! |
Hi Yngve, welcome back!
The PRC46 doesn’t fit. It can be made to fit but then the price will be 3-4 times the price of the 46DRS. WP has a new series (4xxx) which have adjustable preload, rebound and compression and is completely different then the WP fitted on Basic/Kalahari. |
Hi again. You sure there is no rom for the other shock?? Have you tried it?
This is the one I meen: http://www.ohlins.com/46prcs.shtml To bad..Well, then we have to make rom.. How is the WP priced compared to Ohlins? |
Sorry there is no room for the shock, there is no room for the reservoir. WP has a different design on the reservoir and it’s a tight fit. I’ll see if I can take a picture in a few day and post, it will explain.
If you talk to Espen at http://www.esp1tech.com/ he will confirm it. There will be a new WP-unit designed especially for the R80/R100 but I’m not sure if it will be a low quality unit (like on the Basic/Kalahari) or a good unit. If you go for the real stuff (4xxx) you will find the price a bit higher then the Øhlins. Hmm, I might have a old WP (with reservoir adjustable compression and rebound) for sale in a couple of months.. |
Godmorgen.
Iv mailed Esp1tech, and he told me that its possible to rebuild the ohlins 46ers/drs (?) so that it have external resevoar conected by hose. This will give it the possebillety to adjust comp and rebound. It will cost about 3500-4000nok at esp1tech. Ill probebly go for that.. |
God morgen!
It has to be the DRS because ERS is of emulsion type (no reservoir needed). If he can rebuild it with external reservoir and adjustment of compression it sounds great! When I talked to him last time he estimated multiple the price you quoted. Hopefully I can test your setup when it’s finished! |
Hi again. Tried to write yesterday, but it diddent work...
Anyway, testing is no problem.I will probebly visit your part of Norway during 2006 so no worries. Can send you an email about that. Have you any tricks for the forks?? Im using W5 oil, Wirts progressive and harder spring, and 1,5cm spacer. Its impressive how mutch better they got, with these small inprovments.. |
