Which one do you take?

Attachment 14689 Heading off to Dilli later in the year from Brisbane up to Darwin then seafrieght over. The question is which to take? initially it looks like a simple choice - however I do like the old scrambler off road, its lighter and much more agile. I have the panniers etc for each so carrying capacity is approx the same. I also have a bigger tank but not the 45 litres of the GSPD. Obviously the GSPD is smoother/faster for the highway and is 20 years younger. I know both bikes pretty well inside out and have a large stock of parts should the need arise. |
The one on which you will most enjoy making the trip, which sounds like the scrambler from what you say.

The scrambler. The rear bevel/ paralever/ gearbox are a liability on the GS.

In Asia you'll be far better off with the nimble and off road option! Get in touch on the way through. |
Yep, do what I am planning - riding my Sertao to Darwin, leave it there, fly to Bali, buy a local 125 (or similar) ride and island hop East to Timor before heading back west and up to Sumatra (Aceh) before flying back to Darwin.
Saves a massive amount of time (waiting for bike to arrive in Timor from Darwin), cost (of bike shipping) and carnet for Indonesia. Once my leg heals (spiral fracture from fall over Xmas) I will be heading for Darwin via the Great Central Road and WA, hopefully in April. |

Yep the shipping to Dili is a complete clusterfudge! Buying and selling might take a bit of time too, however in Bali you can hire a bike for about $5 a day, probably cheaper for a month or so! Got a big shed for the Sertao in Darwin bier |
