O ring gone? (example on my mates LR200tdi, diesel fuel filter banjo)
Copper washer lost?

I always carry ptfe tape in the toolbox., the plumbers thin white joint sealing tape.

use a foot length,and twist it to form a thin string. Wrap this precisely around the groove where the o-ring should go, to approximately the size of the o-ring. sorted.

Or for example you can wrap it just under the head of the bolt where the copper washer was, or by wrapping it around a suitable former (biro etc),a rudimentary o-ring can be made.

Yep, I always carry ptfe, great against all kinds of leakages.

Another specific technique for seasoned ptfe bodgers is to try and build up lots of tape under the head of the bolt progressively, to create a kind of taper that will (hopefully) seal very easily against the hole even if the bolt cannot be done up too tight. Useful if the hole the bolt passes through also acts as an oil gallery.


The bastard I bought my dr350 off had stripped the oil sump plug thread, and to hide it he'd took the crush washer off to gain about a turn and a bit of good thread then wrapped the bolt in over half a roll of ptfe. It worked though as I did about 500 miles on the bike before changing the oil and finding it, and it never leaked in that time.

clean it up as best you can, drill and tap a 6mm thread through it then then glue it into the sump permanently. then use a 6mm screw with a copper washer under it as the sump plug.

What Kind of glue would you use that could handle the 6mm bolt being undone and done up ? One of the strongest loctites ?

JB WELD after a thorough de greasing OR just get one of those emergency rubber sump plug bungs, tightens up and will never fall out......

in the USA you can get them at auto parts stores like Pepboys or the one pictured is very like the wine bottle stoppers, but i got mine from a Chandlers that sold all kinds of stuff for boating, i think it was about $5
