Bibler Tents
 

Hi Everyone,
Bibler tents are expensive. Are they worth it? Any experiences and advice would be appreciated. I plan to travel in North and South America solo. Thanks. Bill.

Bibler makes the best tents in the world in my opinion, but unless you are mountaineering or engaging in other such activity, I wouldn't spend the $600 + dollars for more tent than you need. I would get a twin wall (mesh + rain cover) tent from North Face / Kelty / MSR / Mountain Hardware or similar mid-range brand and I believe you will be happier with it - especially during hot weather when you just want to keep out the bugs.

I bought an MSR tent not so long ago. It was far more than I ever intended buying but its been worth every penny. Its a convertable type - i.e. in good weather you just put up the inner and role down the sides which leave just a mesh, acting like a mosquito net and gives 360 views. In poor weather chuck the fly over it and it'll stand up to any weather. If its wet and warm leave the inner sides roled down with the outer fly sheet over the top and its cool and dry. It even has a loft for all the stuff you want close at hand. Have a look at their website (do a search)

Having said all that- if some git sticks a knife through it a £300 tent won't fair any better than a £30 tent! Food for thought.

You and I think alike. I have used the Bibler Ahwahnee for about 4 years now and it is my choice. Easy to setup( I can do it in 4 minutes with all my riding gear on), no rainfly to worry about, plenty of ventilation, light weight, compact size, etc...
It's very pricey and I don't like the fact you have to pony up another $150 for a vestibule( I don't have one but wish I did sometimes)
I traveled with a guy who used a $150 REI tent and he was happy.
So you decide just how wealthy you think you are.

The bibler is indeed a great tent. I have use several for climbing. However it is intended for high altitude mountaineering where the air is cold, thin, and dry. This allows moisture to go through the single wall gore-tex like material nicely. In humid or even normal air, moisture will build up badly.

This tent is not for you unless youre a climber or travel in very dry climates.
