Coat?
I´m just wondering is it highly recommended that I take a bike specific coat with me while travelling? I´m going to be travelling on a small Honda CGL 125 TOOL, so my max comfortable speed will probably be around 80km 90 max...so around 40-45 mph. Or could I just use the coat I currently have that isn´t really meant for a mortocycle etc...but is somewhat wind resistant. I´ve had it for some time now so it´s not so water repelant any more. I just don´t know if I want to spend more money on ¨things¨ to bring if I can spend it on my travels. And I don´t have much money in general either way.

Probably the biggest difference between an ordinary coat and a motorcycle jacket is body armour which hopefully you won't need but if you do have a prang might make all of the difference. You don't say where you are from, or current location, but if you have the opportunity to buy a cheap new or second hand motorcycle jacket I would get one.

You dont have to have a proper bike jacket. Use whatever is most comfy. At 40mph I'd say a walking jacket is fine. Why not wait until you hit the road, you can buy gear practically anywhere. If you're buying a new jacket anyway I'd just just get a proper bike one, armour might protect you a bit more in a spill. You could easily get a good bike jacket for around £100.

I've never come off a bike going faster than 20 miles per hour....but even at slow speeds I've been very glad to have shoulder and elbow pads. So will you, someday.
Hope that's helpful. Mark |
Given you can get cheap adequate armoured gear I personally think its crazy to contemplate a trip without it.
Many would argue the opposite but at 80 km per hour a trip down the road has the potential to gouge out some serious layers of skin. Then you have the same issue you have with a burn, potentially large areas susceptible to infection. Depending on where you are in the world you may have less than sterile options for treatment. A bad case of Infected road rash will end your trip just as quickly as a broken leg. If for whatever reason you don't want to wear armoured gear you can get something like the Draggin Jeans Rider jacket which is kevlar lined and looks like a casual jacket. Having said that there is a guy on a Honda 110 something or other who has ridden around the world mostly in shorts, t-shirt and flip flops. So I guess it comes down to what level of risk you feel comfortable with. I have seen enough accidents on the job to know that for me that means ATGATT. YMMV :thumbup1: |
+1 realmc26.
I came off at 50kph in Kaz last summer. Still got my skin thanks to wearing proper (but inexpensive) gear. |
Coat
Hi, not sure if you're in the UK but Aldi have some bike gear in at the moment at affordable prices.
