Essential outdoor gear
 
I have never travelled around the world, but I have spent alot of time outdoors and camping. IMHO the two most versital pieces of equiptment are good duct tape and large garbage bags. I can't count the uses for each of these from shelter, first aid, waterproofing and making a raft.
