Hot weather protective clothing
Looking for suggestions on what to buy for a ride thru MX and CA. Want to be well protected but not potential heat stroke victim. Leaving in January riding dirt and street, coast and inland mountains.

My girlfriend got a very nice Joe Rocket jacket that the linings and outer zipped out leaving a mesh jacket with the protection in. The waterproof part can be added just like an extra layer if it suddenly starts pissing it down. Seems like the best option in that heat. I had my Hein Gerick stuff which was just too hot and I ended up just wearing my cargo's and a long sleaved t-shirt which obviously didn't offer any protection.

I used a Pharao Tour jacket/trousers in south Asia this summer, from Polo in Germany. Mail order available and if you phone them, they speak English if yer Germans no good.

Look for a light-coloured riding suit with ventilation zippers on arms, breast and shoulders, and pant with zippers on the thigh plus zip-off legs. Important is that the suit doesn't have a z-liner, but if possible a zip-out inner jacket with a membrane for cold weather.
Hein Gericke offers different models with the Touareg series. |
I had exactly that- HG Cruise suit (light grey) with removable liners and zips on the back, sleaves and chest- still too bloody hot! I just didn't wear the jacket very often in the extreme heat. We met others who had not only jackets but separate back protectors too. Very safe but must have been roasting.

MX Stuff?
Had you considered getting a set of MX body arnour that you can wear under your regualar clothes? Cheap, hardwearing and very breathable, and under a shirt or jacket it makes you look well pumped up!
Er, so someone told me, a friend of a friend. :rolleyes2:That kind of thing isn't any sort of reason that would lead me into a purchase. *cough* Happy Riding. |

If you are starting your Mexico trip from the US side in January you really have no worries about excessive heat. The north and the interior plateau can be downright chilly with a cold front settling down from the north in the high altitudes. Otherwise it is quite temperate, one could wish for such summer weather at home a lot of the time.A leather jacket or lined riding setup might be appreciated. Along the Pacific southern coasts and gulf side and in lowland Central American areas you may experience nice warm weather perhaps as warm as low 30s Celsius.
Agree with Mike after doing a trip starting this past March wearing such a mesh and armour Joe Rocket Jacket with waterproof liner. With a thick sweater underneath it was good for the cool weather and it was the only jacket I wore riding all the way from Canada where I started when it was -1C. My jacket has the waterproof removable liner which I found useful as windbreaker worn there but with only short sleeves underneath it tends to feel clammy and stick to the skin . I left the liner in the bag and wore a cheap nylon windbreaker over the outside and it was ideal and very quickly removable if the temp went up going down the mountainside .If it got really rainy I pulled on a rainsuit over it which works well as a protective shell for the real cold weather too. |
Good advice Sjoerd!

i know how you feel, you want to feel some protection but its so hot you can fry an egg on your fuel tank!
you could wear a moto-x style armoured mesh vest and then just wear a light jersey over the top? works for off-roaders but they use up a lot of energy and overheat in anything more substantial. could work for you if its going to be scorchio? and you could always vary the top layer. you need to cover up because if its hot sunburn will become an issue, and if your on the road you might not feel yourself frying! |
