Iceland and Scotland Tent's
 

Hi everyone hope we are all well,

Just re researching trips for a few planned trips up to the Cairngorms in Scotland and for a trip with dad to Iceland and Norway to next year.

I've been looking at a few Hilleberg's but seen a few things about zipper issues on them.

Been looking at the Soulo BL and the Tarra.

Had a few recommendations for the Keron range as well.

I'm fancying free standing as a consideration and one that doesn't pitch inner first.

Has anyone else got any expedition 4 season tent recommendations other than the Hilleberg's that I might have overlooked for high wind conditions and life on the road or has anyone used the Soulo BL or Tarra?

I have never used a Soulo or a Tarra but I have an Akto and a Nallo and I have never had or heard of a zip problem.
The trouble is, once you have had an Hilleberg, nothing else will do....

Same here: two Hillebergs, no zipper problems, and I've had a couple of nights on various continents where most nearby tents blew down while I slept soundly in mine amidst the chaos.

I've previously had zipper (and fabric tearing) problems with North Face, Walrus, and Sierra Designs tents. YMMV.

You might find a lot of problems about zippers on Hilleberg, but why?
Simple answer, it's the first thing that will break one those tents after one or two years (365-730 nights) of use.
But, other tents break/wear out usually before their zippers break.
Zippers are like tires on the bike, some hold longer than others but none will last forever.

Keron GT is a very popular tent for longterm traveling by motorbike.
Don't worry about the pegs, I use 20-30cm nails from the hardwarestore, goes into any ground but beton and granite.

If you'd like to put the tent up in strong wind and rain, don't go for a inner first.

I did my RTW with a Hilleberg Saitaris, have also a look at Exped, Fjällräven and Helsport.

Looks like the Hilleberg will be the way to go that's a good point about what I've read regarding zippers.

I'll check the other brands mentioned out as well

Maybe a bit too late, but I can also only recommend Hillebergs. I just came back from a 3 weeks trips to Nordkap and I used my Hilleberg Staika daily in all kinds of weather. Only drawback is the weight, but one night with strong wind at the coast and HEAVY rain I felt absolutely safe in it. Especially for Iceland I would avoid tunnel types. Had several models ( not Hilleberg though) that broke in stronger wind.
