Leatt neck brace over your jacket?
 

Hello Folks

I'm considering a Leatt neck brace and would like to wear it over my armoured adventure jacket.

The Leatt STX Road is advertised for use over a jacket, but everywhere I check it's no longer stocked or unavailable (in Canada). This model is my preference.

The Leatt 5.5 suggests it could be worn over a jacket but works best against your body and is redly available in Canada.

Anyone on this forum using the Leatt 5.5 over an armoured jacked? Thoughts?

I posted on the HU Facebook page about a LEATT neck brace.

There are people using them over their jackets. The 5.5 seems to be a good option for this as it has a lot of adjustability.

I Have a Leatt 3.5

I only use a neck brace for trips I know I will be predominately be riding very technical stuff or be riding very fast off the tarmac.

For these trips I don't use a regular motorcycle jacket. I use body armor that is made to work with the Leatt 3.5. Underneath I may use a Kevlar shirt that I have sewn in a front zipper (to make it easier to take on and off, or to open up for even greater air flow. On top I wear a MX/Endur/Adventure type shirt. On this shirt I have sewn in a zipper across the shirt so that I can stuff the front of the Leatt brace through the front of the shirt and into the body armor.

I also wear padded shorts that protects the hip and tail. I also wear knee and shin braces that stuff into very stiff adventure/mx type boots. Those boots are not waterproof, so I also carry Sealskin Goretex socks in case I will be riding a lot in the wet.

I also carry rain gear that I can put on top.

I love this set up! But it is a set up for what I consider hard riding for me.

As for long adventures I probably would have left all of this at home - except for maybe the shin and knee brace and maybe the shorts. I would have compromised a bit on the safety for increased comfort and versatility. For one, this safety gear takes up a ton of space. I can't speak for comfort in terms of using such a neck brace for extended periods of time with a heavy duty jacket - but my guess is that it would be dreadful. And from a safety perspective - discomfort over a prolonged time turns into fatigue and irritation, which turns into accidents.

On longer adventures I bring adventure pants and jacket. In addition I also like to bring my knee and shin pads and a pair of good riding jeans. The convenience of being able to simply take off the knee pads and walk around comfortably is a great benefit for some days.

After much deliberation and research myself, I have bought a Helite Turtle 2 air vest.

I think for all round protection, it far surpasses a neck brace. It does the same thing as a neck brace but also gives you full protection of your back and front. Enclosing you in a cocoon with 50x the protection of D30 armour.

However, out on the trail I wouldn't use it. If you're dropping the bike through rough terrain it will be inflating when you don't want it to. And at £20 a cartridge, it doesn't make sense. Especially if you're dropping the bike multiple times over a tricky section.

If I did a mostly off-road trip on a small off-road bike then I think I'd buy a Neck brace.

And if I was riding in very hot countries a neck-brace maybe cooler than an air-vest too.
