im surprised nobody has mentioned yet that burning petrol openly is highly toxic?

thats why every petrol stove you can buy pressurizes the fuel and preheats it to vapourize the liquid before burning at a much higher temperature.
never ever use a petrol rig in an enclosed space

You can find alcohol used as thinner or cleaner in almost any hardware shops and that works in the Trangia.

Meths burns clean as does gas. All the other fuels seem to be somewhat inclined to soot and most have uncontrollable flame.
Last spring I bought a new optimus omnifuel, intending to use it with paraffin at first, then when that ran out switch to petrol. but It is hopeless for simmering. I have now reverted to using my £10 gaz stove ( including gaz cannister) as my primary stove and the omnifuel as a backup in case I run out of gas. This is unlikely as a 470 cannister is good to go for about a week and I carry a spare one of those. When I install a new cylinder I start looking in the garages and likely shops for a replacement. so have a week in which to find one. The optimus cannister holds about a liter which at a push would give my bike an extra 20 miles when full of petrol. The paraffin jet does allow it to be a little less fierce than the petrol jet. To my mind it makes the most sense to have your stove run on the same fuel as your vehicle. Sadly the gaz stove is just SO much easier and quicker to use. If I had my time over I would have bought two of them and take them plus a spare gaz cannister. It would mean I could always have cooking capability for at least two weeks which is about as long as I am away from Europe/west Africa.
