petrol used in a trangia?
 

Santa just gave me a Swedish Army Trangia cooker. The instructions say methylated spirits.
Can I also use the fuel from the motorbike or will I cause a huge explosion?

I use a Trangia in England and parts of Europe where it's relatively easy to track down meths, elsewhere I use my MSR petrol burner.

You can use Meths or Alcohol in a trangia..... NEVER EVER Petrol........

no petrol fuel at all... but a good Vodka will work nicely if you can't get any other alcohol for cooking...jeiger

Well it MAY not explode BUT you will get flames about 6 feet high .:funmeteryes:
Try to find methanol or methyl hydrate [same stuff] it doesn't stink like "good old" British meths ,in fact methyl hydrate doesn't smell at all ,truckers use it as air brake line antifreeze .
I've experimented with a few different types of fuel ;my advice would be to stick with methanol ,it burns clean.Some of the other alcohols release a lot of soot when burnt .jeiger

BTW the Swedish Army Trangia is great used over an open fire ,like a billy can .

absolute right...
well about the black soot... some alcohol out of the country shops are very high percentage... if you get a lot of soot... just mix it with a "bit water"... YES WATER and all the black smoke and soot will not appear and don't make your cooking pots look that old either.
had some pink methylated spirits in Sweden, very aggressive and lots of soot, just added some water to it and it all burned nice and clean.

You could use the "bedouin burner" approach: Fill the burner with sand, pour gasolin on it and light it, but you'll get a lot of soot.
Or you could buy a gasolinburner, like the Nova, a Trangia adapter, and the Nova clicks right into your Trangia.

I use HEET in my Trangia, its easily found and the containers are resealable. I don't need to carry around a dedicated fuel container for it. It burns clean leaving no soot on the pots.

I made up a holder/windscreen for mine using a tin can. The bottom section is used to burn wood, its just a 1qt paint can with the top and bottom removed and some holes added. Everything packs together into a Snow Peak 900 pot.

The conversion is for the Trangia 25 and 27 ,not the Swedish Army Trangia .
It could be done ,but you'd have to cut a hole in your windshield and fabricate a base for the Nova .IMHO it's not worth the effort because the alcohol stove and small pans work very well in the SAT .

here is my DIY cooking setup... :D

yeah I know a bit posh if you figure out what this pots are made of.. :blushing: ... but perfect small and less than 400g all together with multiple options to heat up, very fast to cook, very cheap in the long turn to run. :D
even suitable for cooking indoors on a table with the Trangia inserted without problems... don't want to see you using a petrol stove indoors, which is not a good idea... but this one here dose the job, works in the field, in strong wind, indoors, in the cold... just every where.

this wind shield stove holder works like a chimney and burns very fast regarding it's up draft, even better in the wild, if fuelled with wood, the only trace left behind is a bit white dusty ashes on a very small footprint.
Regarding it's heavy up draft it even burns wet stuff, such a heat is created.
another benefit is that the material cools down sort of immediately after the flame is extinct... so you can pack it away faster than any other, don't need to wait for ages to be cooled down.

Trangia petrol conversion?
 

Could anybody please elaborate about getting a petrol burning stove for the trannie?
I sort of know that you have to get a separate burner and fuel bottle, but not exactly sure which/how.

We went to some places where we could'nt get Meths unless a local doctor smuggled you some...so for our next trip I'd like to be able to use petrol which is always readily available.

With the Trangia adapter No. 9100 it is possible to fit the Optimus Nova burner inside Trangia cook sets No. 25 and No. 27. To fit the adapter to the Optimus Nova burner and to fit the burner inside the windshield, follow the instructions below.
A. Fitting the Adapter No. 9100 on your Optimus Nova burner.

1. Unscrew and remove the fuel hose from the burner. Unscrew the nut at the bottom of the burner.
2. Remove the burner cup with legs. It is possible, but a little tricky, to bring the control key assembly out of the hole on the burner cup.
3. Fit the adapter on the burner, threading through the hole on the adapter. The arms of the adapter should point upwards, so that the arms are level with the burner head. Fit the priming wick below the adapter.
4. Fit the enclosed priming cup. Do not forget to tighten the nut. Fit and tighten the fuel hose again. Ensure there are no fuel leaks before lighting the burner.

B. Fitting OPTIMUS NOVA into the Trangia windshield.

1. Fit your Optimus Nova burner into the hole for the meths burner from above. Start with the fuel hose; put it through the small hole designated for multi-fuel burner adaptations. Fit the control valve through the larger hole. If you have an older model of Trangia you may be forced to make own holes for the fuel hose and the control valve.
2. Press the Optimus Nova burner downwards a bit until the adapter locks onto the windshield.
3. Connect the Optimus Nova to the pump and fuel bottle and you are ready to go. (Refer to your Optimus Nova user manual).

A word of wanring on using trangia pans on a fire....

I have done this in the past and melted a hole clean through the pan. The aluminium pans aren't that heat resistant. Given the choice I would go for steel MSR pans and a petrol stove, but they ain't that cheap or light!

One good thing about trangias is their ability to do a slow simmer. My MSR whisperlite stove is great at delivering a tactical nuclear strike on any food I cook over it but if you're trying to do coq-au-vin you need something in the way to diffuse the heat
