tried the 'goon' bag (empty cask-wine) inside a t-shirt but it's noisy.

tried the motorcycle trousers (folded).

tried the t-shirt stuffed with all other clothes.

none of these are particulary comfortable after day 2.

thoughts? solutions? anyone tried any of these inflatables with long-term success?

Like you, I have tried all sorts of stuff without success.

I use a hollow fibre camping pillow that fits in a bag about the size of a bag of sugar and quadruples in size when un-packed.

There seems to only three things I can’t survive without; Toothbrush, Pillow and Chair.

I fold it in half and put it in a pillow case.

After a lot of experimentation, All very scientific, the only thing that works for me is my Rab down jacket rolled up and used as a pillow. It takes up only a little space when packed in its stuff sack and can also be used on chilly nights as a jacket.

You could substitute a Rab for a North face or other make but I like to stick with the made in Sheffield British design.

+1 on the large exped inflatable pillow with the bits of synthetic insulation (from Traveldri). I'll tell you what else is good: the Thermarest Tech Blanket...

Pillow's have always been my bug bearer as well. Usually end up with rolling half my clothes up in something and using that. 25 quid to put my head on something soft is a bit strong. You can get a cheap foam pillow that is more or less one trip and chuck away for about a £5 if you look round the cheap shop's. But that takes space.

I used to use a self inflating pillow from black diamond, during the day I'd put it under my sheepskin on my seat for extra comfort. Might look at just taking a small, down, bed pillow this time. I'll experiment. Sleep is important so make sure you're comfy and you get good zzz's!

Ditto for the camping pillow made from synthetic down. Rolls up small with a velcro strap and fits in the top part of your sleeping bag stuff sack.

Some sleeping bag stuff sacks are lined on the inside with fleece. Turned inside out, with pillow inside, provides a nice soft cushion for a mangy motorcyclists head.

If you are flying overseas for a trip and forget your pillow, a borrowed airplane pillow will do the trick:)

Are you a side sleeper with broad shoulders?

What you need is a pillow that doesn't compress to nothing when you lay your head on it and doesn't feel like your laying your head on a bubble.

I use a NEMO Fillo Backpacking Pillow. I really hated to pay the price, but it works for me.

I bought one of these about 15 - 20 years ago and still use it.

I just fill it with whatever I have - a bag of clothes, travel towel (if dry), bag for thermarest mattress and the sleeping bag stuffsac, riding gloves, ordinary trousers, scarf and suchlike stuff - mosquito net if I'm carrying one, etc.
Punch and knead it around until it's the shape I want. It's always worked for me.
I think there's a much-updated one sold now.

I read on the HUBB that many people seemed not to like inflatable pillows, commenting that they're uncomfortable.

I like proper, comfy pillows when I sleep. I tried these in the shop, and they're excellent. They were a little too thin for my liking, so I bought two! Excellent night's sleep. Well worth a look. They pack into themselves quite well, too.

I use my down jacket stuffed into its pocket more often than not. Works well enough for me, even as a side sleeper with fairly broad shoulders. For extra cushion I sometimes (but often forget to) take my sheepskin pad off the bike and roll it up under my head *outside* of the bag for extra support.
