Plus size riding gear.
Hi there HUBB world!
First of all apologies if this has been covered somewhere else, I tried a search of the forum but didn't turn anything up. I passed my bike test last year and in doing so accidentally inspired my Dad to look into riding. His biggest concern (being a larger gentleman) is finding gear that will fit him so I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for the portly biker? I've told him that bike gear tends to go up to quite large sizes anyway but in his words "Can't you look on one of your forums and get some advice?". He has a background in trekking/orienteering so I think he'd prefer textile over leather and preferably waterproof if thats of any help. Any specific brand recommendations would be very welcome! Thanks in advance and I look forward to seeing some of you at the HUBB UK next month! Albert |
You could look at Aerostich. They do have some considerable custom sizing options and a US friend has just had a new jacket made to fit his somewhat "oversize" frame (hope he doesn't read this!).
It all seems pretty good quality (the new jacket has just survived a 2 week rain laden trip around Canada / New England and the matching trousers are over 15 yrs old). I've no idea whether it's UK available though. |
these folks do custom sizing as well. Motoport USA | Custom Motorcycle Apparel

Both Aerostich and Motoport make EXCELLENT riding gear, made to measure.
I know Aerostich have a UK connection of some kind, not sure about MotoPort. But I'd bet there are local UK companies that do similar fitting. You may even find something that fits him off the rack. Best thing to do is get out and visit some good shops that stock a good range of gear ... always try on first. I saw an amazing array of gear for sale at the big UK bike shows. Fantastic prices too and many brands available in lots of sizes. The UK like USA has lots of made in China gear (or Vietnam, Pakistan or wherever) under various brand names. If you find one that you like your could order online. Some do XXL and TALL versions too. You may have some made to measure companies there as well. IMHO, few can match the versatility or quality of Aerostich. Andy Goldfine has been doing riding gear for 30 years or so. Great customer service too. Aerostich should be pretty good for UK region as it's from Minnesota ... a pretty cold place in Winter. So pretty good in rain and cold, great design elements. My only complaint would be the suits are a bit heavy compared to other textile gear. They have great armor, great zippers that never wear out and fabric that will save you in slide on tarmac. Seen it take abuse IN PERSON. It's tough. Could all these expert riders be wrong?? https://photos.smugmug.com/Celebs/i-...1050-no-XL.jpg |
tourmaster has plus sizes, I know bevcause I used to be 3XLT and wore their Air intake jacket and Air venture pants....But that was first generation of that jacket and I'm no longer that big (and no intention of getting like that again).

Might be a tad late replying to this one but I'm also a oversize biker and spent the last 12 months looking for a good quality jacket and pants.... to fit a 6 foot 300lbs broad man.
Found them ! Dainese pants, breathable but not goretex, fit excellent, have since fitted clip on braces to make life easier. Held Carese 2 jacket in size 345..... perfect fit and so much more comfortable than the sweat bags I've been wareing for the last 2 years. Hope the above helps someone, especially the larger someone. Bike safe! |
