Ray Mears style?
 

Hi All,
Has anyone tried camping Ray Mears style... A tarp draped oner a rope/string between a couple of trees, with a hammock underneath. I know it wouldn't be much good in Norway, but in warmer climes it could be good, and easy to carry.

I would not recommend it anyplace in Canada as the flying hordes here might make off with you in the night.

Sure you need some trees or a gatepost and the bike to sling it but you don't have to worry about what's on the ground or find somewhere flat. 2 trees on a 45 deg slope, no problem. Try pitching a tent there!

They take some getting used to if you don't normally sleep on your back but they're really comfortable...zzzzzz :palm: :sleep1: :palm:

I know they are EXTREMELY comfy, as i spent many a night in a hammock while i worked in Thailand for a year... Oh, and i guess a mozzie net is a must to!!

same as me, Hennessy is the best.... and love it, my mate using a EXPED hammock right as you see at the setup like Ray Mears.... well that didn't last for long, on our last trip to Sweden he crashed right throw the middle and dropped his bum to the ground... not because his set-up was wrong..... the EXPED wares out, and mind you my mate "Andi-fatboy" is a lovely 5,5-foot 110Kg meatball...... he was a bit upset after the drop.... his Hammock only lasted for two trips...... he still sticks to use a Hammock next year... not again a EXPED but may a Hennessy....

well a tiny hint if you want to use your bike on one end to fit the rope of the hammock....... make sure your bike can't fall over to one or the other side........ happened to me ones while I was in the hammock...... the side-stand on it's own was no good, at the end I roped the bike both sides to a solid rock to keep it upright.

well yah......... the terme is like this:
"BASHA" is a M.O.D. (ministry-of-defence) rain proof fly-sheet..... for bivouac purposes, can be found in any UK-surplus shop !
in sizes: 2.5x1.5m, 2.5x1.8m, 2.5x2.5m, in olive green or DPMA, with six securing loops along the outside so you can tie or peg down the "basha", made from 4oz silicon coated rip-stop nylon.... :)

this "BASHA" is a very common and well known lightweight item for all sort of outdoor use and specially famous among bushwhacker regarding it's small packing size........... in OZ they call it a "HOOTCHIE" but is pretty much the same thing than a UK MOD "BASHA"........ common people may just call it a tarpaulin or in shorthand known as "TARP"........ with other word.... if you don't use one outdoors, you may get wet if it's raining or your brain gets roasted in the glaring sun.........
