Average cost of cheap hostels in México

Hi all,

I will start my 3 month Trip around Mexico in December 2022 with a RE Himalayan for which i am looking for in México actually.

Can anyone help me out with some prices for basic accomodation as i don‘t want to camp but my budget is somehow limited.
Is it realistic to calculate with not more than 25-30 Euro/Night, or do i have to expect higher prices?

Thank you for your help

I have a friend who may have a like new Himalayan for sale Jalisco plated if you have interest. Guadalajara.
Depending on your needs my experience had been that I can travel here for 1000-2000MXN/day gas, food, hotel. If you like your liquor, then add to that.

I returned from Chihuahua state a few weeks ago and was paying around $500 pesos per night. Sometimes more, sometimes a little less. I wasn't looking for the least expensive, but if you budget $500 Mx for accommodations you should be fine.

$500 Mx is about $24.91 US as today's exchange rate - nice!

You ask about prices of "Hostels " in Mexico . , Keep in mind that there are no rules on what constitutes a " hostel" .,
Better just to look for cheap , or low cost hotels . I have noticed that in some of the tourist oriented locations there will be rooms offered as being in a " hostel " or hostal implying that it is aimed at tourists or backpacker types and the price was no bargain , actually more expensive than nearby hotels or motels in Oaxaca . I think they are playing on the notion that they are being aimed at foreigners or those who wish to congregate with more similar foreign visitors .

Your 25 to 30 Euro price range comparison is a good one , quite realistic - you will be in the the upper mid-range .

There is a noticeable price creep over the years but 500 pesos now is a reasonable price , but there will be hotels and motels offering lower prices, although 300 is still possible .

. Don' t be shy about walking into any hotel or motel and asking about the prices of rooms , then ask about the most economical rooms they have . Hotels will have a range of prices for rooms of different size and appointments and and how high up . In a multi level hotel high floors tend to be lower priced because of the time taken by elevators or stairs are inconvenient . A room with air conditioning will cost more than if it only has a fan . One really does not need ac in lots of locations ( think of elevation in the mountains ) , night time temperatures can drop rapidly and a fan will be very comfortable especially if you have a window that allows cross ventilation . Rooms sharing a toilet and bath down the hall cost lest than a bathroom en suite , so if you are not a frequent night time potty visitor that is not a big inconvenience .
The moteles de paso may advertise out front a super bargain rate based on twin occupants in blocks of 4 hours and these can be rented for several blocks and so cost less than a hotel which is supposedly a "regular hotel ". Nothing wrong with them and they usually have super secure parking and food can be phone ordered from nearby pizzerias or taquerias from in room menus .

Case in fact; Creel, tourist town, I had a quote of $800 Mx, including dinner. I know there are more economical places around Creel. The motel owner told me of another location that cost me $400 Mx with private bath, secure parking, clean bedding, and clean room. She has two habitaciones with private courtyard access, rented by his mother-in-law. He even walked me the three blocks, making sure I found the place. Even that room may have been open to bargaining, but the lady was in her 70's, and I suspect this is her retirement income.

Last Time I was in Mexico at least the more common tourist destinations had plenty of low budget backpacker hostels available. check hostelworld.com if you don't mind a bunk room. That will save some money. Avoid the party hostels unless you want ...well...party with adolescent us americans. In Mexico City I can recommend Hostal Regina in Centro Historico. Very nice place. 250 MXN per night. No party hostel.

I mostly used Airbnb in south and central America and indeed in Mexico too, and albeit this was in 2017-2018 and prices will be a bit higher nowadays I still often found Airbnb the better option pricewise. My budget at that time was around 12 € for accomodation and in most places I could wiith some effort find a place to stay for this price. In touristy and much visited places I had to pay a bit more of course, and in less visited places a bit less. I very rarely stayed in shared rooms…

I checked a few locations in Mexico on Airbnb, Oaxaca, San Cristobal de las Casas and Guadalajara and I could easily find a room for under 300 mexican pesos ~ 14,5 € in all these 3 places. So you might wanna check out Airbnb too….

Someone referred me Hostels Home in Mexico a good cheap hostel to stay. It has free Wi-Fi, common room area and a locker to keep your stuff extra safe. Apart from that Mayan Monkey is a damn cool place to stay!
