Bike friendly place to stay, Antigua Guatemala
Antigua Guatemala is a beautiful colonial little town, and staying in the center may be a problem to park your bike and keep it safe.
We have a room for travelers, 5 minutes away from Antigua, in a safe neighborhood. The room is huge with 2 queen beds, so up to 4 people can sleep there. Kids are welcome. There is a fireplace, nice colonial furniture, terrace, wifi, cable TV, private bath with hot water, and safe parking for your bike. Price is 25 dollars a night for 2 people, 10 dollars for each extra person. It includes breakfast. We will be happy to help you plan your stay around here. More info and pictures via PM. Safe travels! Pauline |

Chris,
Will do. We're at Lake Atitlan at the moment. Heading to Antigua in a few days. Still looking for a good place to stay in Antigua if you have any motorcycle friendly budget options. Thanks, Kevin |

If you're up for a nicer route than the CA-1 all the way, do this: leave Panajachel to Godinez, then to Patzun, to Patzicia, and then pick up the highway from there to Antigua. A much more scenic ride! Safe travels, Chris |
Thanks Chris for the suggestions! Will do...

Route question
Chris et al,
A routing question (the cafe was closed today too...). We're planning on leaving tomorrow via GUA5 to CA5, to Coban and then staying on the 5 to Flores. Is this a decent road? Is it paved or are we expecting gravel somewhere? Cheers, Kevin |
Kevin,
We ended up booking a big tour for this weekend so we were out of pocket, sorry we missed you. Or maybe you can still swing by this morning, not sure how early you're starting? For the route you mentioned, you will hit gravel/dirt between Montufar and Rabinal... most of the way. Then back on small roads to Salama, then I suggest taking main road to La Cumbre and then North to Coban on the 14 from there. Its a big day of riding, but lots of great scenery and roads. Getting to Coban will probably be enough for one day, depending on your bikes/style. Safe riding and sorry again we missed each other this time! |
Like Chris said, that road is about 40kms of dirt, but verify around El CHOL if the bridge over Motagua is there or not. My understanding is that it was washed out last year. There is suposed to be a hanging bridge that you can cross on your bike close by.
once in Coban, head north to Chisec, on highway 9, and look for hway 5 north to Sayaxché. All pavement. But if you have time take the 7E (ruta del polochic) to Panzos and up the 29 looking for the 5. All dirt, but wide roads. Well worth the extra hours. REMEMBER, none of the roads are marked, you need to ask frequently. The Road to Sayaxche you catch at a Gas station, between Raxhuja and Fray Bartolomé de las casas. If you happened to have to spend the night along the way, in Fray Bartolomé de Las casas, there is only one hotel worth its salt. Hotel Malinek, Q92 for two, airconditioned, very clean, secured parking for the bikes. Wikimapia - Let's describe the whole world! |
Thanks guys, meanwhile we're at the point of leaving Flores (Tikal) this AM for Honduras. We stuck to the "highway" as we were in no mood for dirt roads. Sorry we missed the cafe in Antigua. Cheers, Kevin
