Broken bike in Altamira, Mexico
Today 40 miles from town my rear wheel bear failed. It was like driving on a flat tire with a lot of bad grinding sounds. The bike only has 800 miles on it. I hope I'm not stuck for Christmas.

busted wheel
Which Altamira are you stuck in? in Tamaulipas state or Campeche or ...another one or is it Ciudad Altamirano, Guerrero ?
What kind of bike? How badly broken is the wheel? You are a bit sparse on actual details. You are indeed probably in for a bit of a wait at this time of the year. Make yourself comfortable in a little hotel while you sort this out. If it is a question of the spokes all collapsing you may be able to find a local bike shop who can lace up new spokes after they find the right size. If it is bearing failure that should be easy enough for any mechanical shop to repair, bearings are standard sizes. Make the best of it, at least you aren't shoveling snow. |
I agree, you might be in for a wait. I was broken down in Guatemala for 2 weeks while I waited for my part. My advice and in my experience, do everything you can locally and if you need to order a part pick it up yourself in the capital. Befriend some locals have them watch your bike and stuff. Otherwise you may have to wait while your part gets shipped around and waits in the capital you have to pay duties and taxes, call them its just a mess. Just my advice and good luck. Let us know what happens.

Don't Cry Wolf Here Poser!
BTW, I wonder which $800 Chinese "wonder bike" he bought?

I think he got sorted out without informing us here, as I saw a post from him in the travelers seeking travelers saying that he is currently in Villahermosa, Mexico. That was posted one day ago.

I got it fixed at a chevy dealer. New rear wheel bearing. I hit the road and broke down again on Christmas morning alone. Stayed in Village with a Mexican family no English no internet. 5 day to get fixed. Broken again 3rd time but part will be in on Wed. New KTM 990s 1,800 miles on it. Just bad luck.

Man, not that is a seriously nasty run of bad luck!

sounds like you are challenging my record, 5 rear wheel bearing failures (1150GS), but all in 130,000kms.
Glad that you got sorted out. What's your scedule? We are in Morelia, waiting for a Scotish couple (Truimph 900) to catch up with us to ride together for a few days. If you're in this area, join us to the Butterfly sanctuary and Mexico City on Friday or so. Cheers Johan |
I have never had a rear wheel bearing fail. Wear out ok but this had no bearings left. The second was fuel and electrical. Now fuel pump is dead and KTM was closed until today the 5th. Local dealer in Villahermosa is not on my good list. Full retail $ 470 Retail this clown $ 670 U.S. I took the bike out of the shop today. I will fix it.
