Buying and Registering a Bike in Mexico (2025)
Hola follow enthusiasts,
I am a Canadian Snowbird looking to purchase a Mexican bike and register it here in Mexico. While I could ship or ride one of my bikes down, I figured it would just be easier to pick one up here. I am starting this thread to compile the information I gather as there does not seem to be a good source of current information. What I know (correct me if my information in incorrect): In Nayarit…
I welcome any information for anywhere in Mexico and will update this post (or thread depending on HUBB’s editing policies) with the information gathered and the processes I will go through. Jeff |

Nayarit is one of the easiest states to register a moto. In Jalisco, a Mexican moto license is not required to registered a moto, because by law your home country license with moto endorsement is accepted. Also, you cannot register with a FMM but everyone gets around that by putting the factura in the name of a friend. To register a moto in Jalisco, a comprobante (utility or phone bill in your name) is required, along with your visa (temporal or permanente), passport, and the legal original factura. The dealer can obtain your plates for you, about 2000 MXN additional cost. If you are renting and do not have a comprobante in your name, the landlord can provide you with a letter of residence and that should be accepted. If you are purchasing used, go to the recaudadora with the seller and confirm that the registration history is clean. All past annual registrations have been paid in full and there are no outstanding tickets on record with the Transito office. I suggest you make payment in public at the Recaudadora office upon the successful completion of the transfer and not transfer the cash in a bank. You could find a "gestor", facilitator, who specializes in vehicle transfers if you are unsure. Buena suerte,
