Camping in Mex and C. America

Anyone traveled these routes. We're starting in Baja and making our way south. We want to optimize savings and camp 2 out of 3 nights or so. I was thinking you could ask a property owner to pitch your gear in their yard (compound) and pay them a couple bucks for the accommodation. I know almost all the private homes have walls or fences around the property. I imagine camping along side of the road or in the open would be inviting trouble. Thanks!

camping choices

Hi Rob
I've travelled through Mexico and Central America solo and with others by motorbike. I always do quite a bit of camping, mainly because I enjoy it and sometimes in more remote places there just isn't any accommodation available.
I camp rough/wild and have never had any problems, Baja has some great areas in the desert for this. For a bit more comfort and possibly security there are some nice beaches where you can camp alongside others at various campsites.

If you are camping rough, I tend to follow two rules, I either make sure that no-one knows I am there by choosing somewhere remote and well off the track or that everyone knows by going into the village and asking for a space for my tent. I've often then been invited into houses or to camp in gardens, compounds or even verandahs.
Good luck.

Yes, I agree with tiffany there, best methods are isolated or obvious. Cover for the bike is always good too, out of sight out of mind as they say, don't be teasing people looking at your expensive bike.
