Copper Canyon

Can anyone provide me with some timely information on Copper Canyon in the State of Chihuaha - thanks in advance

mollydog 27 Jan 2015 05:33

Hi Hans,
There are a couple of recent reports here on HUBB from guys who recently rode Copper Canyon. Two guys on old Indian motorbikes did it, maybe one or two others too?

Also look on ADV Rider, Ride reports section ... there are many reports about Copper Canyon.

If you have any specific questions, I may be able to help. I have visited
5 times, the last trip this past November. The main road from Creel down to Batopilas is under construction but understand there is another, alternate dirt road to get to Batopilas.

It is the most remote part of Mexico ... a lot to explore in the area and some interesting sites. A good guide book about it's history would be a good start.
A very interesting story there.

Hans, judging by your other posts you are in the region now and considering going to the CC these days ?
Do pay attention to the weather reports and forecasts.

The last week it has been rather nasty winter like weather in Chihuahua and not very comfortable for motorcycling .
Could be nicer by now but take notice .

I went there last December.

I am not yet very well traveled so take what I say with a grain of salt. This place is just amazing.

Try to see however if you can ride down there with a partner, not sure riding there alone is the best thing for you.

It is very remote and pretty lawless but 99% of the folks there are nice and the roads will check all of your adventure boxes.

Sorry guys, I almost forgot

There was some recent activity and we made the decision to give it a miss. Right or wrong we assessed the most up to date info and bypassed it. I was disappointed but ..... shit happens

Now back in the States in Florida, the journey continues

Bummer...

I am wanting to go back there ever since I left. Someday soon I hope :funmeteryes:

Copper Canyon crossing the Rio el Fuerte river

Can anybody help me, please.
Is it doable to ride between the Cienegita village and Choix through the Rio el Fuerte river? In goole maps the path through the river disappears but the OpenStreetMap shows the ferry link. On google earth there is boat visible on the river. Is there any way to cross the River in that area?

Havent gone thru there but maybe this will help

From Los Mochis to Batopilas ??? | Adventure Rider

BTW: The route I took (leaving Canyon) was Urique, Mesa Arturo, Tubares (nice bridge there), Choix.

Guidebook

Gday Mollydog.... Can you suggest any guidebooks for the history of the area?
Cheers Brett

My favorite guide book for the region is a Moon Travel book by Joe Cummings. It's no longer in print, but you can buy used copies on Amazon. See link below.

This guide also covers Central Mexico but gives a brief but good history of Copper Canyon.

Perhaps the best place to learn about the fascinating and varied history is to be found in both Batopilas and Creel. Both towns sell great guide books and histories.

Not a guide book, but before you go do read, "Born to Run", by Christopher McDougall.
