credit card imprint
i´ll be damned if i can´t find the info i read last week. apparently you need to leave credit card info at the mexican border when you bring a bike into mex. this assures them that it will not be sold in the country. my bike has a value of approx. 25k. anyone know how much of a credit card limit they require? i don´t use credit often, so therefore i have never requested a very high limit. i have brought my car across several times, but not for several years, and i do not remember this request. thanks,P

Hi!
We passed through Mexico about one and a half months ago and did not need to leave a creditcard imprint at the border.. I read the same thing but i think they don´t do that anymore. I checked with a another biking friend of ours and he didn´t have to leave anything either. We took the bordercrossing at Tijuana and he came into Mexico through another bordercrossing.. but i can´t remember which one. cheers Ferry and Elisa |
Every vehicle has to pay for a temporary permit. I believe I paid about $32 US for a KTM last month. It's not so much of an imprint as it is a charge but every foreign vehicle pays.
If you're only going into Sonora, there is no charge. |
Hello Paco. I crossed the Mexican boarder in Nogales on Oct 12. You need a valid credit card and photocopies of your drivers licence, passport, registration and tourist visa. they charge $32.00 to your credit-card and give you a receipt. This is non-refundable. They also give you a sticker which you place inside your windshield or keep with the bike. You will be asked for this, i was numerous times. Remember to purchase insurance, just not at the boarder. They're a rip-off!
Good luck! |
As for your limit on the card: They have no way to check this. So anything goes, as long as you have a card.

Went accross at Tijuana a couple of months ago.The way I understood it the credit card was used to pay a bond of sorts that they carge you for if you do not check out of the country/cancel your temporary vehicle import permit within the valid period. They asked the value of my bike. I told them around $7000.00 and I then asked what the fee was and they said around $140.00 if I did not cancel when leaving the country. A good insentive for remembering! Also good to remember to cancel if you want to return in the future with another vehicle. They will not let you in with a vehicle if that is on your/their computer record!
