There is a new free(primitive) campground 30 KM from Tikal and only 20 meters from the beautiful Lake Peten Itzá .

You can camp right at Tikals park gate in the park, not the main gate on main road, its on a soccer pitch at one end, and there are sodas (eateries) family style as well. This area is right in front of the Jaguar Inn and Tikal Inn, which one offers camping too, as well as showers/bathrooms and a swimming pool. You really only need one night there, get up early for the sunrise or catch a sunset, spend day exploring the ruins.
