Good motorbike mechanic between Guatemala and Panama
 

Hi There,
we are currently in Panajachel (Lake Atiklan Guatemala) we are heading down to Panama, and we have a problem with the back break of the Yamaha TT600R.
The bike was stored for 11 month and when we started our trip the break did not release anymore. This happend only after a few hours threrefor the break blocked and got really hot.
We took the break several times appart but all looks fine inside.
We got new breakpats made.
There is no air in and break fluid is not leaking.
Does anybody of you know where we could get a new break for the Yamaha, or do you know from wich other bike it could fit?
Or do you know a good mechanic somewhere on the way who would be able to fix tis break?
Or has anybody of you had this problem before and knows what this problem could be?

my friend owns the triumph dealership in managua, nicaragua. they work on all makes of bikes from harleys to bmw's. he is the best mechanic in the country.

If you stored the bike in Texas and it was there that you already discovered the brake was not releasing you really ought to have had it diagnosed and repaired right there in Texas before riding on with a dragging brake- Even if it only happened once or twice that is a life threatening condition.

It sounds as if you have had the brake caliper apart a few times ,but have you cleaned out the brake fluid reservoir, its passages and the piston ? It may be binding because the fluid return holes are blocked , preventing the brake caliper from relaxing after application.

Panajachel has lots of tourists and expats , some may know of a good mechanic there or in Antigua.

Your best bet is to contact the YAMAHA dealer in Guatemala City and arrange for them to look at it .
With no rear brake it will be risky to ride it especially in the city and you may have to hire a" fletero" .... a pickup truck with a driver who will take you and the bike to the Yamaha shop in Guatemala City. Fleteros will be found at the plaza and taxi stands waiting for jobs.
If that is your course of action then you can rent a hotel room in GT City for the night and take a taxi there. I recommend Hotel Clariss with address 8a Av 15-12 Z1 a very nice place and very reasonable price. Just write out that address and show it to the taxi driver and he will zip you there.

Forget Antigua, there is no good mechanic here .
If you don't want to go to the Yamaha dealer (they are good) , then try this place KFR Guatemala / Fritz Klimowitz Racing . They have been pretty good for me so far .
