Good Paper Maps
Heading South again to Argentina from USA and need some good detailed maps. I'm old school so don't use all that GPS jiggary pokery.
Last time I did it, it was mainly on highways so didn't need the small scale detail. Just need suggestions and experiences for brands like eg - AAA or Michelin. A brand that's detailed, reliable and easy to obtain. Ta |
you can buy any good mex map in mexico at the Pemex. very detailed
|
The Guia Roji is overrated and sold at Pemex's and elsewhere.
There are numerous errors in the "detailed" maps. There are roads that are paved and not shown, year after year they have the same mistakes. PM me and I will help you out. |
Omnimap - world-leading international map store. all counties. great quality

National Geographic World Adventure maps
The Adventure World maps by National Geographic are pretty good. The maps are printed on some kind of thin plastic that doesn't tear and won't turn into a soggy mess if they get wet. Ask me how I know. $11.95 per map. There are maps for most of the big countries, but not every one. They take 7-10 days to arrive if ordered over the internet. You might find them in a good map store.
Adventure Maps - National Geographic Store Its hard to find maps once you arrive in some countries, so I recommend loading up before hitting the road. Never found one in Guyana, Suriname or French Guiana. I found a few OK maps in Bolivia at magazine/stationary stores and tourist offices. If you want to start a conversation, just open a map. |
If you want maps, start looking around here:

I've used and recommend the ITMB maps for Latin America.
The off-road roads they show are fairly accurate. |
+1 for the ITMB maps.
If you're traveling light, just take a central america map and the south america atlas (same as the map, but in book form and easier to fit in your tank bag). |
I like Reise Know How maps. Amazon sells them.
- waterproof - tear proof - multi language - more detailed than any GPS or Google map For Argentina, the best maps are the Atlas de Rutas by Firestone. It is sold in most bookstores or magazine vendors in Argentina. It's very similar to the RandMcnally Road Atlas for the USA. |
Got a Nat Geo one for Mex. Seems to be OK at the moment. Thanks all.
