harley mexico ride
 

Hi Everyone
Don't crucify me! My wife and I live in Canada, minus 15 C tonight, we are dreaming of our trip, planned for Feb & Mar 06. We ride an Ultra Classic and plan on heading west from Dallas to San Diego then south through the Baja, Ferry to Los Mochis or Mazatlan then south along the coast to around Salina Cruz. Around there we decide whether we head back north along the East coast or continue on the Cancun. Maybe even Belize.
None of you talk about traveling on a Harley, could that ride be that terrible? We ride over 20,000 kms a year up here in the summer months. Open to discussion. harry1 in Kenora Ontario, Canada.

Hi Harry1. I also have a harley and i have a motorcycle Rally gathering for our club(Latin American Motorcycle Assoc) early 2007 in Uruguay. Could you let me know how and how much did it cost to transport your bike to Uruguay from Sydney.
By the way, its nice to see a Harley suceed in travelling the world, very impressive and well done.

Don't worry, we're not anti-Harley! It's just that for the more extreme trips they're not the best, the Forwoods aside.

Lots of people have travelled a long way on Harleys. It's always dependent on where you want to go. If you're reasonably normal, the mud roads of the Congo aren't the most fun on a Harley, so you will choose where you want to go, just as those riding two-up can't go where the young crazy guys on the serious off-road bikes can.

You pick your bike, you pick your route, you pick your experience. It's different for everyone, but you will always have a good time, no matter how you do it!

Just go - you'll be fine.

Harry1. No problem. 6 of us rode our Harley's to Puerto Vallarta for the Mexico National H.O.G. Rally and also to Morelia again for the Rally. Crossed on the ferry twice. Again no problems. We are doing another Baja ride to Cabo. Leaving on Feb 4th from Southern Calif. Maybe we will meet up. I have the itinerary if you are interested.

HArry have a good ride...hwy 200 along the coast is GREAT!....especially from Acapulco to Salina Cruz.....no worries...the HD ultra will do fine...expect alot of truck traffic...and mnay time I had to pass on double yellows or suck exhaust...the topes "speed bumps' will get to be a hassle on the ultra, but doable...remember thru some mountain towns, they do NOT have a sign warning of the bumps....fuel range shouldn;t be much of an issue either

the cuotas (toll roads) are much better shape, but expensive...(for instance the 100 miles north of acapulco did cost about $38US...IIRC...but lonely US similar freeway type roads and great bridges...

I did a trip similar to your plans on a Kawasaki Concours and had no problems with road conditions or topes. Go for it! If you ferry to Mazatlan, head inland on El Espinoza del Diablo (the spine of the devil, route 40 I think) one of the worlds great mountain roads. you'll need folding floorboards http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb/smile.gif
