You weren't very specific about what document you are allegedly missing, but in most countries you are required to have a temporary import permit for the bike. Did you have this? Panama police are notorious for jacking up travelers for bogus infractions, it's usually a matter of waiting them out, as they are probably angling for a bribe. If you can give more details, maybe someone can help.

Hi Don.

Read that on your profile. It's your kind of story that make's me think why people go to country's, where thing's like that can happen. You read about it all the time. I have no idea what you are going to do, But a pound (UK) to a pinch of dog poo. It's going to cost you money or time. Have you found out what paper work you need. Or try and ask someone local who know's what's going on. Or your going to get stiffed.

I'm sure Don will find this very helpful at this moment, nice one

I have lots of contacts in David but am not home at the moment, will be back there next week.
Send me more details & I will try to find someone who can help, problem is Pana customs are a real pain in the proverbial.
did they take the bike at the check after Pasa Canoas?
Can you scan & email me the papers that you have for Panama? there should be a temporary permit & an insurance certificate for 1 month. The fumigation receipt is not important

pemi44 5 Mar 2013 15:05

Thanks all for the help

PANAMA , anyone going into panama need to make sure that they do the paper work at the boarder

Sjoerd Bakker 6 Mar 2013 04:16

I don't know where John993 reads about these kinds of problems" all the time" .
This is actually the first time I have ever heard of it happening and in some ten
visits to Panama I have never had a problem with the border , just several
speed trap hankypanky incidents far from the border
Apparently Don you know you forgot to do some of the .required border
paperwork. Could you clarify a bit more for the benefit of other readers?
I suspect ( and hope!) the bike seizure is only a temporary measure until
you can explain or pay your way out?
This is definitely a heads-up to anybody crossing any border- As you say......Pay attention
to all border crossing requirements , do not go on until you have the
paperwork for person and bike all looked after.
I wish you the best Don , be patient and persistent

Pemi / Don
How is the situation at this time , please give us
a bit of an update. Has the problem been resolved ?
Last week your posts were a bit unclear in the panic
of the moment .

Heres a speeding stop from yesterday about 100km past David... Hilarious...

Cop (standing at roadside with bike, waves me down)
walks up to me garbeling into the radio. After 2 mins approx holds up the speed gun which says 106... (the following conversation is in Spanish)
Cop: this is an 80 zone.
Me: Really? I didnt see a sign back there, i thought it was 100km?
Cop: No here is 80, back there its 100.
Me: Sorry about that.
Cop:Your passport... (phone rings)
5mins of yapping later he finishes and I hand him my passport...
Cop: is this your licence?
Me: No its my passport. Do you want the licence?
Cop: Yes
I hand him my licence.
Cop: where are you going?
Me: Panama City
Other phone rings...
5 mins later
Cop: Where are you from?
Me: Ireland
Cop: Where are you going?
Me: Panama City
Cop: takes out phone, types the number 20 and shows it to me...
Me: Whats that?
Cop: Thats what you pay here for speeding.
Me: Really are you serious! but I have no money...
Cop: (pauses) Ok... (then types 10 into his phone and shows it to me)
Me: Whats that?
Cop: You can pay this...
Me: But I dont have any money to pay this!
Cop: (pauses) Ok Ok Ok... (looks at my dash, covers the tachometer until the number 5 is visable)
We look at each other... There is a pause...
Cop: What kind of bike is this anyway? A BMW.
Me: No. A Yamaha and its 15 years old. Nice bike though!
Cop: Nice bike.
Me: Thanks. What are you driving there?
Cop: Suzuki
Me: You like it?
Cop: No
Me: haha
Cop: Shakes my hand and says "Mucho gusto, drive at 90 here..."
I drive on...

Welcome to Panama :-)

Whoa -hoa! -- back up a bunch there Don.!
First you are crying for help and advice leaving us with
am image of you being robbed of your bike by
Panamanian authorities and you provide no details ..
Now you post about avoiding a fine while riding to Panama
City. Obviously you still have a bike.
Now give us all the details how the previous crisis
was solved/ avoided/ misreported . You owe us that

Pemi44 had his bike seized.

Moonshaddow78 got the ticket.

Sjoerd Bakker 21 Mar 2013 20:39

doh

Sorry , my mistake for not reading the signature lines closely😶🙈
I was not expecting a random unrelated interjection like Moonshaddow's.
Still, it would be nice to hear from Pemi/ Don on how he is
faring in his struggle with Panamanian officialdom .
How goes it Don?

Two Moto Kiwis 22 Mar 2013 03:28

We too are very keen to know on what basis the paperwork is wrong so we can maybe avoid the same issue.

Don??????c?

Chefonbike68 23 Mar 2013 04:49

entering Panama

I'm also few days away from entering Panama, in hope to get some infos soon

Re: Need help in panama

My guess is that they had to park the bike under lock at an aduana while they got their importation together. Pretty normal procedure I would think.
