Northern safe route through Mexico
Knowing that I have about 12 to 14 days to cross Mexico, departing from Merida and have to be in Phoenix to meet my wife ( after 3 months ), what route would be suggested from you guys, knowing that I came down from Baja and used the southern route 200 and around and seen, Guadalajara Puebla, Oaxaca.
Are they any NO NO region safety wise ? After going to Tegucigalpa a few days ago, let me tell you, I know now what danger is and have absolutely no desire to challenge the devil again As for Mexico, I hear to avoid Monterrey area, I do know that some of you have travelled extensively the country in and out over the last few decades but really is the Whole Mexico really safe everywhere as I know it ? chefonbike |

We did Baja and mainland down Hermasillo, creel copper canyon, durango etc. Don't listen to the american news and you will love it. "they" whoever "they" are say the eastern side towards the boarder is dangerous so we "heard" ... take that as very second hand information. Ken and Carol Duval were stopped by cartel who were more interested in the bike and their trip. Here is our spot to see our travels, note spot died in a rain storm so everything south east of there is missing. http://spotwalla.com/tripViewer.php?...15026e3771de82 Eyes open and enjoy  Cheers Andi & Ellen |
Maybe try this rough route
Mex 180 South out of Merida and tour the museum of the Hacienda in YAXCOPOIL Then Mex 261, Uxmal ruins sit and tak e the scenic roads to Oxkutzcab and loop back to Mex261 to Campeche. Mex 180 is prone to high speed travel and bypasses most of the interesting Mayan towns Mex 180 along the coast is nice but salty if hard north wind blows but 261 down to Escarcega is also good and let's you take the calm paved alternate route to Candelaria, Tenosique , Emilano Zapata and Palenque Mex 186 to Villahermosa ,and more Mex 180 until at istmo you can chose diverging routes of 180 or 147 through pinapple country Many different routes then possible coastal or inland , whatever you wish No need to worry about them being safe and do not worry about Monterrey . We had a great tour of that city only a month ago ,ride up into the fancy south side sunburns of Santa Catarina which equals the Hollywood Hills for fancy$$$$ houses But if you are aiming for Arizona it makes no sense to do Monterrey Better to tide up through the middle of the country , the Bajio maybe up through Copper Canyon country on their excellent highways |
Come through Veracruz and I will show you the brake pad change and oil change.
I also speak the northern Ontario dialect of Canuck fluently. Crown Royal always on hand. |
Hey MikeMike,
Planning to spend a night or two in Vera Cruz and take Tricepilot's recommendation on La Mera Madre for dinner. There are two of us coming from Minnesota and going to Tikal through Belize. Probably stay at Holiday Inn. Maybe you could join us for dinner and a beer? bier Leaving Minnesota around May 1st or 2nd. |
Hi chef : )
Nice meeting you yesterday! If you go up along the west coast, there is a nice cute place close to Hermosillo, called San Carlos. You can pitch your tent at the beach, you will be almost alone all the time. In town there is a nice bar, I think it is called MikeĀ“s bar : ) In Chetumal I can recommend a campground with cabins at the sea, called Yax-Ha. Safe travels! Stay away from the cops and park properly IF you happen to go to Playa del Carmen! |
Chef, here is a great shop in Arizona:
Iron Horse Motorcycles Tucson, Arizona, BMW, Motorcycle, Dealer, Used, Parts, Accessories, Apparel These guys will handle your F800 professionally and with care. Recommended by a buddy of mine with high standards who has bought 3 bikes from them and is a very satisfied customer. I have seen their work and it is first class. For the Minnesota guys, let me know when you are coming through. The Mera Madre restaurant is about 100 yards from my house.bier See you there! I can crawl home from there. DAMHIK!:Beach: |
