Road from Creel, Mexico to Douglas, AZ border.....
Greetings from Mexico! My wife and I will be riding out of Creel in a few weeks, heading north to Arizona. In the past we have taken MX 16 over to Hermisillo and up to Nogales but want to try a different route.
Does anyone have any experience with the road that heads north off MX 16 (roughly half way between Creel and Hermosillo....starts at Santa Rosa up to Sahuaripa, on to San Patricio de la Mesa and MX 17)? So far my research says that the piece from Sahuaripa through to San Patricio is paved....is that correct? That's somewhat important because we will be heavy, two up on a R1150 GS. Also, given that Creel to Douglas border crossing would be an extremely long day, are there any decent hotels either in Saruaripa or San Patricio? Thanks in advance. |
Sahuaripa has about four serviceable hotels so you will be good there. Its been the years since my last visit so roads north may well be paved now.
The road from Mex 16 was actually quite a bit farther to west back then , west of the Mex 12 turnoff to Cd Obregon , and although paved it suffered with many slumps of the deep cut embankments collapsing onto half of it. That may have been fixed , or it could be worse. The ride straight out from Sahuaripa to Hermosillo on Son 20 is very good paved.,in case you seek that escape hatch |
Thanks Sjoerd, I appreciate your feedback. I also posted on ADVrider and had several confirmations that the road from Sahuaripa up to Hwy 17 is now fully paved.
As mentioned, I have done Hwy 16 over to Hermosillo in the past but this route will be new so I'm looking forward to it. Cheers, Casey |
It is paved

Def. check the pass through Bisbee is open. A bad storm and it closes for a few hours. If you're looking for a biker friendly place to stay close to Bisbee, Paul and Lauren own the Trail Riders Inn in Tombstone. Safe travels. |
