Salkar Motos Nicaragua - A place to stop by!
Dear Motorcycle Rider,
If you are coming through Nicaragua and you are feeling home sick or need a place to re-charge then you are welcome to stay at my house. I have traveled by motorcycle in more than 40 countries and I know what it feels like to be on the road away from home. Over the years I received a lot of support from fellow riders and the least i can do is to support those that are traveling through my country. We have a room with private entry, private bathroom and air conditioning. The house as you can see from the pics below is pretty big. We have two friendly dogs, wifi and couple of workers that help maintain the house. For the most time of the year I'm traveling but my mother is a great host. Since I started this thread and listed the house on the tent list on Advrider we have hosted several dozen riders. My contact info: VoIP: +1-714-905-6356 Email: salcar at hotmail dot com Please let me know if you are thinking on stopping by to send you directions and GPS waypoint and detail directions. Please give me a bit of background on yourself and about your trip. It will be appreciated if you post a pic of this thread to :) Best, SalCar http://salcar.smugmug.com/Other/Casa...MG_8647a-M.jpg http://salcar.smugmug.com/photos/207749360-M.jpg http://salcar.smugmug.com/Other/Casa...MG_8612a-M.jpg http://salcar.smugmug.com/Other/Casa...MG_8630a-M.jpg |
Wowwwww
Salvador
Where is the parrilla for the asado?????(hahahaha) i would love to go and stay a few weeks looks nice and relaxing. Ansious to see more pics! Saludos desde BA KH |
I was the first!!!
Salcars place is awesome. Amazing yard. You can pick mangos in the morning for breakfast.
It is just outside of the City center so it is really peaceful and quite. There is also plenty of space for bikes. I know Salcar will have some tools handy as well. Bring biker stickers! |

ride safe, SalCar |
Nice dude!
When you end up at Salcars, you've got to have him hook you up with tastes of some of the fresh produce in the area. Try some local juices and the gorgeous Nicaraguan females.

Felicidades Sal Car! Your house looks beautiful. Hope all is going well for you in Nica land. It sure looks like it is.
Cheers Susan |

Hiya Salcar
That stupid carburetor never showed up in Belem... I ending up shipping the Bike to BA and stayed at Fabrizio's house for over a week waiting for everything to come together. Javier at Dakar Motos put a borrowed carb in so I could get over to Uruguay to fix my 8 month bike visa so I am sure it is the carb. The new carb finally made it to BA about a month ago and now I am hoping that it is actually in my bike and running well. I have to call today! anyway life is good here in Azerbaijan.. I met a fellow who is lending me a Paris Dakar to ride around. He was basically given it so he says I can ride it when ever I want. It has less than 7000 K on it!
Hope all is well for you. Did you ever contact my friends Maria and Will Burke? They are in Managua. Funny enough, when I was house sitting at Fabrizios, they were vacationing at the little corn island resort, casa iguana, that Will and Maria are part owners of! Small world. Saludos Susan |

place to stay
Salvador
thanks very much for letting me stay round yours. Great place to stay especially if your bike is falling apart and you are saturated with a lot of rain! thanks again! Simon Get The Dirt / Simon Mendus-Edwards (Mendus) |
Hey guys, I am currently staying with Salvador and it is a good place to stay. He is a good host and will show you some of the things Nicaragua has to offer.
My air filter on my BMW F650 crapped out at the Honduran border and I had to run the bike without one to Managua. There are no bmw dealers in Nicaragua, but Salvador has a Dakar F650 and kindly agreed to sell me his spare air filter. If you have a problem with your bike in Nicaragua I would recommend seeing if you can make it to Tegucigalpa, Honduras or San Juan, Costa Rica because here in Managua it is really hard to find common things. |

I've been trying to help him as much as possible feeding him, giving him tips, giving him free parts (oil filter, screws, wd40 etc) and now helping him build a website so he can raise some cash to finish his trip. i give him props for been the youngest rider (23 y/o) that I know that is out there roughing it. if you have a place for him to crash please let him know.:thumbup1: Managua it is hard place to get exactly what you want especially if you don't speak Spanish. Gatogato has been having a hard time to find Castrol Synthetic oil 10W-50 but we have been able to find it with an Esso brand or a little different numeration Castrol 5W-50... but gatogato wants to keep searching for it:mchappy: i think gatogato will see that the difficulties of finding parts in Nicaragua are a common them in Latin America |

Simon got his site up and running. If you want to have a good read check him out at Global Enduro. He just met up with Irishkev in Colombia and as I write this they should be traveling together. It's amazing to see the power of the internet. I introduced them by email and were able to meet up. To bad Simon could only stay one night at my house because he had to catch up the boat to Cartagena. He is a good laugh and great stories of camping at gas stations, getting rob in panama and much more... |

Kev got here at a good time for me. I had free time and there where some fun activities to do - we had a blast while he was here. If you want to check out a trip where the rider is going out of the road to take scuba diving classes, explore some caves and cool adventures check out his site at Celtic Adventurer - Riding the World |

On general principle, I don't advise breaking your leg in a foreign country. I ignored this advice and broke mine here in Nicaragua a few days ago. Salcar has been unbelievably helpful in getting myself sorted, from guiding me through leaving the hospital (similar to a border crossing you need to stop at a couple different windows and get stamps and things before you can leave. No copies, though) to helping get my and my fathers bikes shipped back to the USA to giving us a comfortable place to stay before we fly back to the States Salcar's been on top of everything. This whole broken-leg thing would've sucked infintely more without him.
Oh, and he's a good guy, to boot. What more do you need? Drop in and say 'hi', you won't regret it. Matt |

It was great having you guys here at the house and THANK YOU for all the gear you left!!! I'm sure future riders going south and stopping by will take some of it with them. I hope you enjoyed your flight today in business/first class back to the US. If you are ever planning on coming back to Nicaragua let me know other wise we'll see you in the states. I wish you a fast recovery and hopefully soon you'll be back to :mchappy: S. |
Salcar is the perfect host!
I stayed at Salcar's huge, lovely, quiet home a couple of nights ago.
It's so nice to be able to relax and talk with like minded people, and not have to worry about the safety of your moto and gear. I would highly recommend a stopover here if you're passing through Managua. Thanks again, Salcar, and I'll see you on the way back north. Cheers Margaret |

Motorcycle Rental Nicaragua
Since I moved back to Nicaragua I've been contacted several times by riders that want to come to this beautiful country and rent a motorcycle. Since there are no motorcycle rentals in Nicaragua (at least not ones that rent by the day), Nicaragua has tons of dirt roads and is still a virgin country for tourism I decided that I should buy a couple of bikes to rent out.
Last night the first client came in... and this morning headed out to Leon. Here are a few pictures of one more rider stopping by SalKar Motos. http://salcar.smugmug.com/photos/235162275-M.jpg The rental bike: 2008 Yamaha DT 175cc http://salcar.smugmug.com/photos/235162268-M.jpg Poke it w/ a Stick and myself http://salcar.smugmug.com/photos/235162282-M.jpg Poke it w/ a Stick heading out on his Nicaragua Adventure! Salvador has a great casa. The plushest lawn I've ever been on. Make sure to stop by.
I flew in, rented a bike, and had a great time. The bike was great. I wouldn't have wanted a bigger bike down there. Lots to see. Friendly people. If you have the opportunity, get down there. |

As you know all motorcyclist riding through Nicaragua can stay at my house for FREE! you need to come visit again. i got some nice beds, more furniture, a kitchen, fridge etc. looks more like a house now :mchappy: 2008 looks a like a busy year down here with a many rides across Nicaragua. :mchappy: I'm glad that you liked Floripa... make sure to put pictures up on your site |

The road to El Rama in the Autonomous Atlantic South Region is pretty much perfect and it is 300 km loooong. It has brand new pavement, very little traffic except for a couple trucks here and there and it is an amazing ride. you go up mountians, villages, lot's of curves and breath taking views. I was to busy looking around that i forgot to take pictures. Next time I'll go I'll do a better job. But here are a couple to give you an idea.
http://salcar.smugmug.com/photos/252034357-M.jpg from this picture you can see that we are in the dry season and everything is turning brown. http://salcar.smugmug.com/photos/252034465-M.jpg because the road is in good condition some people tend to speed and don't know how to drive http://salcar.smugmug.com/photos/252034705-M.jpg then we finally reach El Rama where there is a major port in the Rio Mico http://salcar.smugmug.com/photos/252035133-M.jpg the idea of this place/river, the new road and the port is to start importing goods directly from the US. right now over 90% of merchandise comes from Honduras and Costa Rica. Slowly this will change. http://salcar.smugmug.com/photos/252035947-M.jpg the vegetation, climate and people reminded me of the Amazon in Brasil. here is a picture of people transfering milk from one side of the river to the other.... from a boat to a pick up truck... they move the milk with a normal bucket from the blue container to the gray containers that the guy is carrying. http://salcar.smugmug.com/photos/252036366-M.jpg on the way to El Rama you also pass over one of the tallest bridges in Nicaragua which 150 meters high. you can see all the kids with their blue and white school uniform. http://salcar.smugmug.com/photos/252038015-M.jpg and while the road to El Rama is in great condition you always have to keep an eye out for animals! http://salcar.smugmug.com/photos/252038235-M.jpg |

Casa Salcar is awesome!

Salcar invited me to stay at his house on my trip south. Not only that, I got to join in on one of the dirt bike tours that he runs. Nicaragua has a lot interesting things to see and I would have missed many of them if not for Salcar. His house is beautiful to look at and very relaxing to hang out in after months on the road. He's doing some renovations now and I think it'll be spectacular when they're finished.
Thanks again Salcar for your hospitality. I hope we can meet again for a ride together, either on this continent or another. Andy |
I was really glad to meet Sal and his riding buddies. He suggested a great hotel- The Oasis, in Grenada. And then he bought dinner! Super guy.
Hey Sal- I'm going back to Panama in a few weeks. If I can get a photo of a Montero at work, I'll send it to you. How come Barb got mentioned, but I didn't? You even have photographic evidence of my presence at the ADVRIDER dinner! Nicaragua was great. I want to come back and do some exploring on a proper dirt bike. |

A haven from the heat.
Just what I needed, a haven from the heat in Nicaragua!
Salcar's wonderful big casa, with its wide, wide verandahs/patios was so cool and relaxing - so cool and relaxing that I didn't want to leave and face the heat on the road, again, so stayed an extra day. It's such a pleasure staying here. I'd recommend it highly to all travellers. Great accommodation, great surroundings, great host, great WiFi and great ambience. What more could a weary traveller want? Do yourself a favour - stay at Salcar's casa when in Nicaragua! You won't regret it, believe me. |

Location: Kansas City, La Cruz de Rio Grande, RAAS Geography: According to INIDE, Kansas City (K.C.) is located on the Rio Grande de Matagalpa which serves as a border between the poorest Municipio in Nicaragua (El Tortuguero) and the third poorest Municipio (La Cruz de Rio Grande). Population Facts: According to the 2008 INIDE.gob.ni report there are 261 habitants in K.C. - 71.7 % live in extreme poverty and 28.3% in poverty - 55% are illiterate (50% are between the ages of 14-29yo) - 55% of their total population are younger than 15 years old - 0% have permanent jobs and only 34% have seasonal jobs Housing Facts: There are a total of 46 homes - 98% do not have electricity - 98% do not have portable water - 47% do not have a toilet or “letrina” - 95% cook with wood - 63% have more than 4+ people in one room - 0% have trash collection Kansas City is NOT the poorest community in the area. However, with the knowledge and experience that will develop from working with Kansas City, we plan to launch expeditions into these communities. We are seeking donations in the form of supplies or cash: - Tooth brushes and tooth paste - Basic medicines - Cash to print visual aids and handouts - Prizes (e.g. toys, radio) to give out to those that participate during workshops and to those who perform best on the exams at the end of the workshops. Jeremy spent a night at our place and stored the bike with us for a few days. His site is: www.mylucinda.com |
Last month we several riders coming through our house. We had two couples staying with us. Phil and Jayne (siter and brother) riding KLRs and we also hosted Oliver and Heather that were riding two up on a transalp. In addition, Fabrizio, JD and Bruno came down to ride from coast to coast in Nicaragua.
Luckily we were able to hang out all together in Matagalpa! bier http://ultimateride.ca/wp-content/up...7/DSC03466.jpg Despite spending so much time at his mum’s house, we had never actually met Salvador (Salcar on ADVrider). He and his friends Bruno, JD and Fabricio were riding from the Caribbean back to Managua, so we arranged to meet them in Matagalpa. As we entered town we passed 4 men on motorbikes going the other way – it was them! We pulled a u-turn and followed them into the hotel parking lot. We’d all arrived in town at exactly the same time. We had barely parked the bikes and met everyone when a Honda TransAlp with two riders pulled up. Oliver and Heather who we’d met on the beach in Las Penitas! Salvador had just finished his trip through Africa and had lots of stories to tell. We all went out for dinner and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. JD, a fellow Canadian, very generously bought our dinner – Thanks JD!!! more here |

Looks great Salcar! I can donate some money to buy some pharmaceutical and dental hygiene gear. Let me know how to do it.

Surprised you aren't going to *try* renewing your TIP at the closest border, Sopoa. Its only 20 minutes south once you get back on the Pan-Am. Very curious to learn what you finally decide to do and how it works for you. You might do better in Managua. SalCar's moto business manager was ready to point the last guy to the customs office in Managua, then he choose to go to a border, where he had problems, reportedly because he had less than a week left on his TIP... Perhaps the "week" window was an excuse the officials used to try and extract a fee. |
Hi Sal,
My son and I are two Australians travelling down from Oregon down through Central America on two KLR's. We are currently in El Salvador and will be in Nicaragua in the next few weeks. Was hoping you might in town to swap some stories. Cheers mate. |
Awesome gesture on your part!
Looks good and your doing a good job being hospitable to riders and bikers. I am traveling from TDF to Prodhoe Bay leaving May 2015. My plans is to ride through Nicaragua but if I have any problems I will call you. Are Harley parts hard to get a hold of? I heard the owner of the HD got arrested and lost the dealership.......or was that Honduras? Any other shops that deal in Harley parts? :scooter::scooter::scooter:
