Tyres in or around Guatemala City
Hi
We are in Antigua at the moment learning Spanish (sort of) and need to source a front tyre for the GS, anybody know of any dealers either in Guat City or somewhere near. Would prefer a dual sport Tourance or Anakee but not bothered what make as long as it fits. Ride Safe Stay Upright Graham and Sue |
you can get tyres at the bmw dealer (continental) or at this place (tourance and some other brands as well )
COVALSA 5a. Avenida 7-23, Z.9 Guatemala C.A. Celular: (502) 5201-9185 / Tel. (502) 2334-3484 Fax: (502) 2385-0174 E-mail: cimasa@intelnet.net.gt ride safe |
There are a number of other sources for tires in GT city .
The BMW store is a big up to date affair good folks, located at 6 Av 4-54 Zona 4 ,tel 502 331 33 35 One street over to the west puts you on 7 Av and a few blocks north near the "Eiffel tower " you will be in the cluster of moto -parts and accessory stores .All the major brands have their shops within a few blocks of each other in this area of Z 4 abutting Z9, find one and they can quickly point you to the others. FPK is a good source a big industrial supply, auto parts and moto parts store between Av 6 and Av 7 , at 5 Calle 5-75 Zona 9 , Bridgestone and Dunlop et al. VRC , 7 Av 8-44 Z9 ; parts ,tires and MV bike in store. The parts stores will not have any service facility to install tires but some have arrrangements with other dealers to do that for a reasonable fee, or they can point you to a tire changer . Take your tire to any of these and pay to have them to balance and install it. If a particular shop does not have the tire you seek then of course check at some of the others before comitting to an order process which may take very long to deliver a tire from USA,Europe ,Japan or Mexico |
Yes as said above
2 months ago I got service and a rear tyer at the BMW dealer in GC they are great people. Ask for Jeny and Marco and please say Hola from me (Yoni, the Israeli rider on the red gs) it's now 12000km (I'm in La Serena Chile) after Marco's work on my bike, and it runs great!

+1 Marco , he knows his stuff. He replaced my GS 1100 rear drive unit bearings this April after they busted up just after crossing over from Copan to Chiquimula GT. Say hi for me too, the yellow GS1100 from Canada.( as a PS I would tell him also that if he ever again loses a small bolt like that holding he ABS sensor in place in the rear drive ,please find another exact replacement and don't just slap in a sheetmetal screw with a dollop of Lotite! Took me couple of hours, drill, tap and Helicoil to correct that!) After a one day layover in GT city and I was mobile again. .
Now that I am reminded of Chiquimula I want to share another possible source for tires in that city. This April while spending the weekend there ,waiting for Monday to take the GS to Guatemala and BMW dealer , I explored and got to talking with the young owner of a small motorcycle store selling 100-250cc Chinese Movesa bikes. He thought it might be a useful idea to set up a rack of tires in the sizes employed on the various adventure touring and touring bikes that foreign tourists seem to favour. Chiquimula is on one of the most favoured tourist routes from Guatemala into Honduras to the Florido Copan and the Aguacaliente crossings. Many North American, Euro etc riders pass by here. If they could obtain tires in Chiquimula it would be a boon to to those who have no desire or no plans to include crossing through Guatemala City. His name is Kenny Valdez and he said that if riders are planning a trip through Central America and Chiquimula area they could arrange with him to obtain the tires they desire . He said that for him it would be a matter of ordering the tire from the various sources in GT city and having them shipped to Chiquimula on many of the daily bus connections. This would require no more than 2 working days. Really rare tires brands might be a longer order time , but then there would be alternate brands to default to. Kenny thought that if motrcycle travellers know that they will be needing a tire by the time they reach Guatemala , they could contact him with the information on which tire they are looking for and place an order with him. If he has it on his shelf already ,good; if not he can order it in before the traveller arrives. Eventually he hopes to build up a reasonable stock of most-asked for sizes . As yet he does not have a tire installation service but he can easily direct you to a spot in Chiquimula where that can be done. If you think that this planned service can be of use to you you can contact Kenny Valdez by telephone at his shop ,tel. 79 422 792 and tel. 79 426 375 . His store is located in downtown Chiquimula only a few blocks south from the plaza at 5 Calle 7-10 Zona 1 .His shop is called Movesa Chiquimula Kenny does not speak English, so you will have to carefully practice your Spanish. And Of course, be considerate, don't make him go to a lot of trouble and expense and then not show up to buy the tire he might have obtained for you specifically. Tyred out!
Hi again
Managed to get tyres at OgrisMoto in Guat City, great guy and a good stock of after market gear for the GS and others. BMW were closed for two days due to National holidays but we're good to go now. Thanks again for the advice. Stay Upright Graham and Sue Bienvenidos a Ogris - ArtÃculos para motos |
Ogris is great. We stopped there for all sorts. Great help and they showed us out of the city in torrential rain as well... We're 2 up on GS1150 after just arriving via sailboat into Cartegena...
Great trip but since I hate boats and water I wouldnt do again.. Not sure which way you guys are heading but Golden Eagle is awesome with a Aussie captain Peter onboard.....Luxury boat too.....5 days.. San Blas islands for 2.. good fun. Safety is first too. Bikes x 4 were on our boat.. big bikes as well. Nothing major damaged just a few minor scratches from a few ropes... amazing how they get them onboard from the beach in Puerto Lindo as well. Flying was nearly as cheap.. with COPA.. who dont fly bikes until 15 november though which was too late for us. If you do boat it.. DONT STAY at Hotel Wunderbar.. it was ABSOLUTELY DREADFUL. Bed bugs in our bed and really the worst thing is the owner didnt care. It could be a nice place if the Austrian owner cared more. Cheers JulieBunny |
